For a small contractor that will sometimes do work that requires NDT, for instance a moment weld on a residential garage building on a custom home would the NDT qualify as a certification?I seem to remember reading in the codes about how field NDT could qualify a welder as certified...most of the stuff I do is ornamental as an employee and the boss wants me to get certified. Doesn't the NDT in the field qualify me as certified?I have been previously certified but have not kept up with continuity logs. The validity of continuity logs are always questioned anyway, how do they know it wasn't my wife that signed the continuity log?As I understand it the only time you need to be certified before welding is if it is required by the contract the boss has. If you are working on a powerhouse it will be in the contract that only certified welders will be employed for example. However I thought under ASME B31.1 or B31.3 you would be able to be qualified as certified by NDT on the job. Is there also a provision like this for the AWS structural code D1.1?Yes I know I am being lazy to not look it up myself, I do not have a current copy of D1.1 but I also want to make sure I am not misinterpreting what it says in the codes if anyone wouldn't mind answering the question I would appreciate it.
Reply:If your woking on a pipeline, nuclear plant or something high speed low drag, you'll probably test for each job!   I have been self employed since 2003 and only a couple of time times did I need a cert.  One customer required a cert and paid for a company to come in and pass anyone with a heart beat that could run a bead.  A good basic certification is D1.1, its a structural steel cert that will qualify you to weld up hill with 6011/6010 and 7018.  Basically get this one and tell your customers your certified. We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
