I am trying to drink enuf coffee to get started on this. Need to take it apart for look, they think it's scrap and needs rewind. Anything else that could make winding appear shorted? I am all up for advice or disassembly. Needs to happen now. Anyone got a spare handy, 100 hpwww.urkafarms.com

Reply:Is that old duct tape on the exhaust screen?? If so that could cause overheating. Also if someone has greased the bearings too often the grease will build up in the windings also causing overheating. We greased the big crusher motors once a year, 6 shots with a handgun just enough to keep the seals wet.Ol' Stonebreaker "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:What makes you think a winding is shorted?Winding resistance is going to be very low on a 100hp motor(like a few tenths of an ohm).Have you meggered windings to ground?Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite
Reply:Its rodent screen. I told them about grease, I warned them the other day. I wanted them to have us PM and investigate the whole system.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:No, I didnt megger. I simply ohm.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:My bud rewind a couple small ones here but just watched a big one and it looks like quite a chore. Need a cement mixer drive as the winder tool.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:So I need to fix flash on my cam but,,,, pic in a min, meant to post this last night .

Reply:Without a meger you're flying blind.I can tell it has bad bearings from the drag marks. At least it is 3 phase so you don't have capacitors and starting switches to deal with!
Reply:Has continuity to ground. The bearing feels relatively decent but it must be sloppier than we give it credit for. I can see a PM bearing change out would be well worth it. I am glad to hear about megger, feel free to expand on what it might tell me. I tried to check with another bud, one doesnt have and another has phone problems and we not sure he could find it anyway. How much is one? For giggles I was trying to find one of those India or Pakistan fix it vids???Last edited by Sberry; 19 Hours Ago at 08:41 AM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I'd say your one picture of the laminations shows arcing between the windings or from them to the steel. If the latter, there should be at least two places it hapened. I don't know (but I might try) if the one insulating strip can be removed and the wires just in that slot examined and replaced without rewinding the whole motor. I'd assume the conductor there would be damaged from the arcing, so just better insulating with modern materials wouldn't fix the problem, only make it worse later.I once rewound an ignition coil which had 41 layers, 400 turns per side, two sides, using #40 wire, IIRC.
Reply:Definitely bad bearings. That might bind it enough to stop/slow it and if one or two coils are shot…You need to test each coil.Do not believe everything that you think.
Reply:You say the bearings feel "decent", but the pics suggest movement so check the clearance between the outer race and the housing. The previous bearing launch may have worn the housing to the point where they don't fit tight anymore, which would also lead to some of that damage. The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes
Reply:Any time I took motor or generator apart I replaced the bearing. It not just motor apart it typically were the motor was installed could be a big pain to remove to replace with bearing. Dave

Reply:The popular opin of minds greater than my own say its scrap. I didnt measure the bearing but I simply felt it up a little and not so worn a guy would fall all over himself which is why the side wear was surprising. It was somewhat recently greased, back bearing feels as tight as a nuns cunny but this larger front one lots looser. Dont mean it hasnt been worked on or been changed. Its late 60's or 70's old.Last edited by Sberry; 12 Hours Ago at 03:50 PM.www.urkafarms.com
