What do you guys get from metal recyclers / scrap yards?

The closest metal supply isn't particularly close and is only open M-F 8am-5pm, which isn't easy for me to get to. There is a closer metal recycler / scrap yard and they are open on Saturdays. Do these places sell the kind of steel you'd see at a metal supply - angle, square tubing, flat bar, just maybe painted/rusty since it's all harvested from used items? Or is it mostly odd shapes you have to cut down to use for projects? I assume it's a lot cheaper than buying from a metal supply shop?What do you guys get from metal recyclers, if anything?

Reply:A lot of scrap yards won't let you pick through the piles, and don't sell any useable stuff retail.  Your best bet is to drop by a fabricating shop, and ask if they will sell you some of their scrap.

Reply:Recyclers by me usually don't mess around with selling. Stop by the local recycler and ask him if they'll put stuff on the side for you.A steel supplier should have exactly what you'll need. Are you looking for cutoffs or full lengths ? Give them a call and see what they can work out for pickup.Check craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, and garage sales for steel or items that can be cutup. You can consider buying items for there steel, if you have a means to cut up. Tube steel from boat trailers, square tube from weight lifting benches, or trailers in need of repair.
Reply:If you are in a rural area, not a metro, check auction sites.  In my area, there is a site called "auctionzip.com" that lists on site auctions and online auctions.  Quite often farm auctions, business auctions, building materials auctions will have usable steel.
