I am looking at trying my hand at some 7018 rods. I have a Lincoln AC/DC that goes up to 125 on DC. Is this suitable for 1/8" rods (90-150 is what Lincoln says), or should I drop down to 3/32" rods? Thanks for helping a new guy learn.
Reply:It's slightly cold but should burn 1/8" pretty good. 130 amps is generally the optimal for 1/8" 7018 but it can depend on which specific rods and some other factors as well.
Reply:Give it a try and let us know.  It could be capable of running that rod in the sweet spot of required heat range but just barely.  You won’t know until you try.  Some machines have bigger balls then others even though it’s the exact same model.  Buy the cheapest 5 lbs box you can find and let er rip.  Let us know what you find out.Lincoln, ESAB, Thermal Dynamics, Victor, Miller, Dewalt, Makita, Kalamzoo.  Hand tools, power tools, welding and cutting tools.
Reply:I would just buy the 3/32”.  Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk:

Reply:Wait a minute...... you're talking about a Tombstone - right? Of course it'll run 1/8" 7018! Go ahead and run down to Tractor Supply and pick up a 10 pound box of em (5lb if you're feeling non-committal

). Buy 7018AC. If you need more heat, flip it to AC and run it at 150ASent from my Lincoln Buzzbox using Tapatalk

Reply:Standard 7018 has always ran better for me than 7018AC. It's usually a little less expensive too when you buy it at a welding supply. Most big box stores only sell 7018AC. You've got DC on your machine, take advantage of it. It should burn 1/8" if you've got your welder properly wired with a 50 amp breaker.
Reply:It runs them a whole handful at a time.  This one has boxes thru it.  I like it in 2 sizes, both 3/32 and 1/8

Reply:I'd use 7014 before 6013 and it's good to learn how to burn 7018 and 6010/6011. 6013 often get slag entrapment and are basically only good for sheet metal. 7014 burn very similar and are a much better option. There are no commercial welding shops or rig welders that use 6013. I typically only use 6010/6011 and 7018 with hardfacing or super strong electrodes for special projects. In CEP's break very simple break tests 6013 broke in 3 blows of a 4lb. hammer, 7014 took 10 the same as 6010. 7018 left in the open and never seen an oven took 18 but had to be beat back the other way to break the plates apart. 7018 fresh out on an oven took 22 or 23 blows and also had to be beat back the opposite way to break the plates in two.
Reply:I keep H4R 7018 (might be 7018AC) in 1/8 and 5/32, 6013 in 1/16, 3/32, and 1/8, and 6011/6010 in 3/32, 1/8, and 5/32 all in the welding area. All my other rods are put away in a big steel cabinet. That said, in the past 3 or 4 years, the only time I've burned a 7018 or 7018AC is when I'm practicing... sometimes I just feel like burning rods and don't have a project that needs big welds, so I'll just get out scrap steel and run a couple pounds of rods.Sent from my Lincoln Buzzbox using Tapatalk
