Here's a few pictures of a skateboard rail I made for my son from some 2x2 square tubing. These sell for over  a 100 dollars if you buy them from dealers. The only cost for this rail was a little mig wire and shielding gas. All of the materials were given to me.

Reply:Looks nice.  I might add gussets to the base, depending on how hard he's hitting it.  But then, my skateboarding references go back to the era of half pipes and swimming pools.Jack OlsenMy garage website
Reply:We used to call those "trip wires" because you would always trip on the flat coming out before you got to the rail.  Take it from a former "skater" (i'm just too old now) the best thing to do here is extend the front portion enough that by the time he is on he will be far from the "trip".  Another thing we did was make a square with four rails . it was heavy but you would not trip for the newbies.  Hope i was clear?
Reply:Are you planning on bolting it down? It looks like it might slide. Good thing it was cheap, the hospital bills won't be.

Then again kids are made of rubber. I can't believe all the stuff I got away with.

Reply:Sliding does'nt seem to be a problem so far plus he wants to be able to move it around to different spots.
Reply:On the side of safety I would close up the end of the tubing and gusset the uprights.
Reply:I really like the post lintel construction aspects of the project.
Reply:Looks good, how about some action pics?
Reply:cap the ends I have witnessed kids slam the ends and  without caps it could be nasty. You dont even need to weld them though I think they sell plastic end caps at home depo or lowes that press right in to 1x1 tube
Reply:Just another worthless safety suggestion..At each end, weld a 30 degree down canted piece almost to the ground so you're less likely to bang into the squared end and donate plasma.Sorta like this

Reply:Wannabe said"On the side of safety I would close up the end of the tubing"Isnt this one of the reasons they make duct tape, four or five wraps should save a kid from  a lot of skull diggery

Reply:definatly put caps on it . we cemented the posts in buckets worked really good  and two guys could move it around was less to run into

Reply:^^-- I like the idea of dropping the posts into cement buckets .... also Viper's idea of the canted rail ends.
Reply:Unfortunately I don't have pictures, but I built one virtualy identical to the "blue design" above.I riveted pieces of timing belt (tooth side down) to the bottom of the feet. no sliding problems after that.Don't talk about it, Just do it!
Reply:Nice work man.   I did this one for one of my skater friends.   It stays in place just fine. The rail is 4x2 tubing, the ends are capped.

Reply:this reminds me of a job.    about10- 15 yrs ago, this property manager of a real nice tall office building, tells me he wants to build a secure cover over a dumpster enclosure, and says price isnt my 1st concern, my main concern is it lhas to look nice, and weekend work only, as i dont want the office workers to hear noise, or see const going on.       so i did it.  couple yrs later he calls me over again.    watching his security video, kid skateboarders on a weekend bunny hopped there skatboards up on the stainless handrails leading up to front of building, and slid down two flights, gouging the top of rails.    some of the skatboard must of had carbon in them, cuz rust was forming over the scrapes.     anyway, the guy was irate, so i spent a weekend working/buffing these rails out.    i was amazed these kids were capable of doing on these boardsLast edited by 123weld; 12 Hours Ago at 02:54 PM.
Reply:Had a knee replacement in 2007. There was 13 year old in physical therapy too, he also had a knee replacement.  He and his friends were at a store parking lot skateboarding.  Sliding on the curbs, and stair handrails.  He had a fall hit his knee directly on a rounded concrete curb shattering it.  The doctor did a knee replacement.  I know it was tough on him, cause it was on me, he had me wanting to cry for him just listen to him holler as they were helping him bend his new knee.  On a sad note talking with his mother back, she told me they would have to replace it again by about the age of 25 or before because of his growth.  Don’t get me wrong my sons did skate boards roller skates bicycles motorcycles 4 wheelers crashed just about anything that had wheels.Retired Old GuyHobart 210Lincoln AC/DC 225/125 Evolution 14” Saw
Reply:Looks OK but your welds should go completely around the tubing and not have the corners un-welded. It's more professional looking with full welds.
