Ive been replacing the parts of the floor and rusted out sections of a gravel/ rock box( they pull it behind a excavator so they arent waiting for a dump truck) with 1/2 AR 450 plate. From what Ive learned welding on abrasion resistant can be a bitch sometimes. My question for anyone with more experience and knowledge then I have, would preheating have any effects on how it would weld? Or wouldnt it make a difference? Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated as i am always wanting to gain more knowledge and to learn new ways of getting the job done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:Make sure your weld areas are clean and tight fitting. A little preheat to 300º - 400º and weld it up with some 8018 or 9018 and you'll be fine. I weld this stuff for a living.Last edited by Freebirdwelds; 04-04-2022 at 08:19 AM.Reason: SpeelingLincoln 330MPXLincoln Power Mig 256Lincoln LN-25X Wire FeederMagnum PRO 250LX GT Spool GunModified Lincoln 225¼ Ton of Torches OFC-A OFG-AAir Carbon Arc GougingEverlast 62i Plasma CutterIngersoll Rand Type 30 14hpInstagram: #Freebird Welds
Reply:Send me a P.M. with your email and I will share some information on welding Hardox, I work for SSAB (manufacturer of Hardox) in the Research-Development facility as welding-senior research analyst here in USA.

Reply:I agree with Freebirdwelds said. Just remember any time you weld it is heat to 2,700 °F. A rule of thumb is per heat to straw color max if do not know the steel it works for most steel. There are charts and tables for per heating and rod to use which is best way to go. Dave

Reply:All hardox that I have welded was 350° preheat. Then weld. We used 1/16" dual shield on 1/2". Welding on cold hardox creates cracks.Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalkbcwldr80MILLER BIG BLUE 300MILLER 175Miller suitcase 12 vs

Here is the Hardox preheat table, I tried to upload the Hardox welding brochure but it is to large of document.

Reply:RideKTM350 and FreeBirdWelds,Great info, thank you. I did a project with abrasion resistant 500 maybe 10 years back.I lived the steep learning curve on AR, galvanize, and hydrogen embrittlement.I know this will not affect the original poster, but for others that see this, AR and galvanize might be an issue.Because RideKTM350 is a SSAB guy, I will share that I did a project with Swedish Domex steel - truly amazing strength steel!Sometimes it is fun to design and build with steel other than A36.Geoff
