Looking for new mig unit.

I am looking at either the Miller multimatic 255, Millermatic 255 or Lincoln 360MP. Mainly looking for pulse mig. Which one of the 3 would you guys recommend. Currently have a Millermatic 252.

Reply:I have never tried the Lincoln machine, so I have no direct comparison. But I can tell you I love my Multimatic 255.Miller Multimatic 255

Reply:Mark,I have the MillerMatic 255 and the Miller XR-Alumapro push-pull gun, 25 foot (301569).  The gun that came with my 255 is the MDX 250 series.  I guess it is okay... (I would have been happier with it if it used the same consumables as my other Miller guns).  I bought the MM 255 for pulse and spray capabilities.  After about the first week, I have only used it in pulse - steel and aluminum, and for steel, almost exclusively spray, even on material as thin as .093".  For steel I run 90% argon and 10% CO.  For aluminum 100% argon.  I bought this machine for use in my home shop, and at our barn.  I chose the MillerMatic over the MultiMatic because I have several welders, my preference is one function, not multi-function - this is just me.  If space were at a premium, I might have gone with the MultiMatic 255.  Geoff

Reply:I have a Syncrowave 250DX tig, so wasn’t thinking needing a multi process, but the price difference wasn’t to much between the Millers.
Reply:Miller has left a bad taste in my mouth.  Board repairs required for my Syncrowave 250DX (purchased new in 2006, and stored in a climate controlled shop and not plugged in when not in use) after less than 50 hours of use back in 2012, as well as my Spectrum 2050 plasma cutter - also with less than 50 hours of use.  Then the switch went bad in the plasma torch gun and Miller wanted a fortune for a new torch.  And Miller has discontinued parts support for some of the pieces of my Trailblazer Pro 350D.Quite frankly, when I spend a significant amount of $ on equipment I expect to be able to source parts for it for 20+ years.  Also I don't expect to have to replace thousands of dollars worth of boards after so few hours - especially when they have not been abused.I spent well over 20K on new Miller equipment during a 3 year period, and I'm disappointed in the lifespan as well as the cost.My last purchase was a Lincoln 210 MP, and I've been very happy with it.  If I were to buy a large MIG today, I'd look closely at the Lincoln.   Miller un-earned my business.Miller Trailblazer Pro 350DMiller Suitcase MIGMiller Spectrum 2050Miller Syncrowave 250DXLincoln 210MP

Reply:Repairs are different too, some like the Freebird are using 300 some of the day in weldup but garage/hobby maintenance work the extra not such a big deal especially if this is machine, equipment out of position where it ends up 1 gas solid wire.  If time is money and you are paying guys to run it regular the juice is nothing.   But most people less than a full time fab shop buy,,, have some projects that get caught up and it sits a lot more as time goes on.   Saving 5 minutes twice a week in a maint shop not worth it, saving 10 hrs journeyman welding a week a different matter.www.urkafarms.com

Random question, do you ever get any clunking of spool itself when it spins?  It’s not impeding my welding but it is a bit annoying because you feel it jerk the wire slightly. Like when the spool makes one full revolution it clunks quickly.
Reply:Just general repairs and creating  junk in the garage is all it’s gonna be used for. I have a python push-pull gun already that I use on the 252. Lately I’ve just been using the tig for 16ga Mild steel hk receivers. I was just looking to upgrade for the pulse function on the mig since my tig doesn’t have pulse.
