Ranger 8 Fan

New to the forum and already have a problem.  I am pulling the engine (Onan) and I have everything loose and ready to slip out but I don't know how to take off the fan at the rear of the rotar.  I have the long bolt out but I don't know how the fan is put on the shaft. I am about ready to cut it off and just put in a new one later. All help appreciated.


Reply:If you have the field windings out, just take out the whole rotor.  There is a puller for it, but I used a big plastic dead blow hammer.  The rotor is in a taper on the crankshaft.  This is the only way they could keep it straight. (3600 rpm).DavidReal world weldin.

Reply:You'll notice that on the end on the rotor there is an oversize threaded hole, the idea is to screw a piece of threaded stock through that hole and push off the rotor from the engine shaft.You can beat the rotor all day with a rubber mallet and never loosen the rotor. Cutting it off won't do the rotor much good.
Reply:Now, if your just removing the engine and leaving the generator in place, just loosen that threaded stator bolt, and wiggle the engine off the rotor with the likes of a pickle fork, but that bolt has to be threaded into the engine center mount to hold on to that stator, by at least 1/2"
Reply:I haven't got that far yet. everything is loose and ready to pull the rotor and engine in one piece. The problem is the plastic fan at the rear of the rotar with a 6" bolt in it. I have the bolt out but can not budge the fan.  After it is out the rest will slip right out.  I soaked it good and left a lamp on it tonight.
Reply:The fan merely unscrews from the rotor shaft.Ya know, I can send you the service manual on how to remove the assembly, being a lincoln tech and all I have access to every manual in exsistance...Jeff
Reply:Hello Jeff. The fan blowing up today is why I’m here. I’m new here. Why would the fan have blown up? Just got this welder yesterday. It’s having voltage problems. Luckily I was looking at the voltage controls at the control panel. It unscrews. No evidence of previous cracks- all new breaks. No dirt dobber nests.
