Finally finished my extra heavy duty vise stand.  Great to get the vise off the fabrication table, not to mention having a stand I can really hammer on and not fear it will topple over…. 1/2 inch base, semi brake drum filled with sand, 6x12 I-beams.

Reply:That turned out really nice! I'm not a huge fan of vises mounted to a free-standing pedestal style base, but what you did should serve you well for most of your work. I always like to see people do nice work for themselves. It is one of the best forms of "silent" advertisement that there is.
Reply:Absolutely beautiful, Shawn. Nice work

What did you wipe on for the finish?  Looks like Sculpt Nouveau. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Reply:No finish applied - just used a grinder flap disk to remove all the mil scale
Reply:I am not a free standing guy either but,,,,, I like this, also absolutely 100% agree dont want it on the fab table.  I might be tempted to enlarge the table behind it, this is a start having a flat to lay a tool on.   I have same style vise on small bench, just modified pedestal but another thing worth noting with this is the vise itself.    This is "the" vise. This is for work.  Can use beam for anvil so to speak, can clamp to it and the pipe jaws are so good thing to have, like it so much better than having another stand/vise around.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I like the fact you bolted on the 2” receiving tubes instead of welding. Very pro

Reply:Nice looking vise stand!! I have considered such a stand many times, but, I am still using a workbench mounted vise.If I build such a vise stand, one of the receiver connections will be used to connect the vise stand to a much larger workbench. In spite of the base weight, that stand can (and WILL!) tip over,, if you do not think it can, look at the x-rays of my left foot,,As far as finish, consider linseed oil, it is a fabulous wipe-on finish, but, if too much is applied, dry time can be L O N G  !!Linseed is perfect for indoor steel finishing,, if you see really nice looking antique tools for sale,, there is a 95% chance that the finish is linseed oil,,,I put linseed oil on my DIY cant hook that I built earlier this year,,

I put the linseed oil on the wood handle, so, I figured I would put it on the steel too. I can always go back and paint it,, if the outdoor use of the tool is too much for the linseed oil.

Reply:I mounted a hitch reciever under the table edge and attached 2" square tube to the vise and bench grinder so I can switch them back and forth or not at all.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:I have the same receiver under my table, just got tired of taking it on then off so frequently.  Hence, the vise stand.
Reply:Yep, it will also be used as an anvil/pounding platform.
Reply:Not nearly as nice or well thought out as the OP’s but I built this one but never used it. Ended up getting rid of it. Got my nuts in a vise….

Another one I didn’t like. Ended up selling it.
