I have an old Poulan 3700 Bow saw that I've owned for about 30 years. Haven't used it in at least twenty years and decided to crank it today. Had no luck although it did start twice but wouldn't continue running.  My question is this. It has a very simple on/off toggle switch and I assume it grounds out the coil and turns the saw off. I checked the switch for continuity and found that it had continuity at it's connection with the coil in both the on and off positions. I'm thinking the switch must be bad. Seems like in the off position it would have continuity with the connection at the coil and when flipped on it wouldn't have any which would allow the saw to run. Is that correct?  I also figured that if I just disconnected the wire from the switch it should start and would have to be turned off by pulling the plug wire or choking it. I know this is a welding board but the members here are well versed in a lot of ways besides welding so I thought I'd get some advice. Thanks for any help.

Reply:Another thing to check is the reed valves, they need to seal as you crank the engine over to provide the pressure diferential to operate the pumper carburetor.NRA LIFE MEMBERUNITWELD 175 AMP 3 IN1 DCMIDSTATES 300 AMP AC MACHINELET'S GO BRANDON!"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.” BENJAMIN FRANKLIN

Reply:Don't replace it with another Poulan thinking you'll get a similar saw. The new ones won't last like your old one did and none of the parts will interchange. The harder you fall, the higher you bounce...250 amp Miller DialArc AC/DC StickF-225 amp Forney AC Stick230 amp Sears AC StickLincoln 180C MIGVictor Medalist 350 O/ACut 50 PlasmaLes

Reply:Thanks for all the suggestions. After reading everything and thinking about it I'm not too sure anymore that the switch is bad. I'm thinking the carburetor may need some attention after all these years. I'm going to remove it and see whats going on with it. The saw started twice but wouldn't run long and when it did run it was at high fairly high speed. I also have a Husqvarna Bow Saw of about the same vintage. Fortunately it started right up and runs strong.

Reply:That's a great idea for cleaning this tiny carburetor. Thanks for the suggestion. I did manage to find a Walbro carb kit today.
