I recently got my first welder on marketplace, a Millermatic 250, probably from the 1990's. The seller demonstrated that it was working when I bought it, but there's a few things I'd like advise on for fixing it up.1. I think the ground clamp has had it's day, and needs replaced. Are Tweco products still good? They used to have a good reputation, but so did Craftsman, and I've heard Tweco has been bought out. I wrote to them with some questions a few weeks ago, and never got a reply. Is there something specific that I should look for? I'd like to get a good quality one once. The Tweco part number for the 300 amp clamp is 92051130. Do you get a better quality clamp or any benefit from a higher amperage rating on the clamp? More copper, better connection?2. The ground wire for the clamp is about 6' long. I'm thinking it got cut at some point and they just removed the damaged part. There's no damage visible on it, but it seems stupidly short. What's the max length of wire that I can put on it? I couldn't find a gauge on the jacket. Might have worn off. Is it 2/0 copper? And is the connection that I need to crimp on to attach inside the machine the kind of crimp on eyes used for car batteries?3. There is duct tape on the gun hose. I'm not sure what's under the tape or if it's a safety issue. It's a tweco gun. The gun works fine. Is there a way to replace just the hosewire without buying a new gun? It's got a space in the middle for the gas and the wire to feed, so not a standard electrical supply house item. If I wanted to buy once and cry once, what torch is a good replacement?4. There's a blank plate that can be removed and some module added that allows a spool gun to be used. Are these "spool gun modules" available new, or do I need to salvage one out of another MM 250?

Reply:I have the same vintage MM250. The original work/ground wire was 10' of 3awg. I had about 40' of no. 1 wire on it with no problem but since cut it in half to set up another machine. The terminal on the machine end can be crimped but I soldered mine wire rosin core. Harbor Freight has a decent ground clamp for about $15, have them on two machines, no problems. Don't have any advice on the mig hose/ gun. The original 250 one on mine is still good. That Tweeco looks OK, you can put a new liner in it for piece of mind.By the way, welcome to the forum.Last edited by metalman21; 11 Hours Ago at 04:14 PM.Ernie F.
Reply:Forgot about the spool gun module. I may be incorrect, but they may be obsolete. Best thing to do is phone Miller and ask for technical. They are very good with the questions. Ask if they still make the module.Ernie F.
Reply:It looks great. As spool gun goes you adapt most spool guns with out a module.Unless you a lot thin aluminum welding you not need spool gun. I never got spool gun as used to mush wire and it would costly to buy 1 or 2 pound rolls. Tweeco make gun liners the hook to mig welder for Aluminum Dave

Reply:My concern with the gun hose was that there might be bare copper under the duct tape (which seems to be falling apart). I would probably need DesolveIt or something to get the remnants of the tape off. Isn't there electrical wiring on the outside of the gun cable? Or is it only the inner wire inside the liner that is electrified? Is there something that can be used to safely re-wrap the gun hose if there is damage to the jacket? Electrical tape? I have read on a forum somewhere that if the gun cable is damaged and comes in contact with ground the whole cable can rapidly combust.I suppose I'll need to try and see if there is damage under the duct tape and how bad it looks.
Reply:It will be very sparky I would remove ducktape and replace with 2 or 3 layers of rubber tape then vinyl tape 3 or 4 layers. Then a layer of black duck tape. You could with great expenses replace with a new tweeco gun. I just tape and call good.Dave

Reply:I would just overwrap the duct tape with electrical tape. It's such a pain in the arse to remove the old adhesive.Ed Conleyhttp://www.screamingbroccoli.com/MM252MM211 (Sold)Passport Plus & Spool gunLincoln SP135 Plus- (Gone to a good home)Klutch 120v Plasma cutterSO 2020 benderBeer in the fridge
