I had points replaced, the fiber gear replaced, OCV 's checked and all ran fine while at the shop. I started it several times and it checked out fine. Got home from 200 mile round trip and it fired right up but wont idle down.I really hate to turn around and drive back to shop, I have allready waisted a whole day as it is.I read somewhere about the green light being off, well I was told to jump the oil pressure silinoid but it was ok until I jumped it across with a screw driver now the light is out. I take it I screwed up the silinoid. So to get back where I was I am getting a new oil pressure silinoid and hoping I didnt screw up anything else.Could it be in the board? I cant find any bad wires. Thanks for any help yall can provide1990 SA 200Miller 225  Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com
Reply:Where did you get it worked on you had to go 100 miles? There are a few welding shops in Austin that work on welders.
Reply:Stupid question for you, but is the switch in the auto position?I've attached a wiring diagram. It might help you sort it out.

Reply:I took it to Jay down south of SanAntonio, he has done me good in the past and I think he did me good this time also. Just one of those things, I seem to have a lot of lately.Yea the switch is in the auto position. Thanks for the diagram1990 SA 200Miller 225  Rip Miller302Miller 135Lincoln 200 MigHypertherm 600 PlasmaPlasma Cam Cutting TableMikita Cold SawJL Welding Tx . com
Reply:Seein' as Jay was working on the mag which is near the idler solenoid, check to make sure the two wires are still connected to it or if they are that they're making good contact.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110

Reply:If you can't get it figured out and you have a good relationship with the guy who worked on it give him a call. I am sure he would give you some things to look at.
Reply:First is to understand how the SA200's high idle circuit works. If the engine is making oil pressure then it switches the oil pressure switch and the idle circuit can then switch the solenoid to idle down the engine.  Also the idiot light can burn.If the engine isn't making oil pressure then the "engine runs at high idle".

  Who though up that deal?

That is the engine protection system of the 70's no doubt. If there is no indicated oil pressure then don't let the engine rev down nor shut it off,,,, make it run on high idle.

The idiot that though up that engine protection system didn't know much about engines IMO.

The first thing to check is the pressure switch, then the idle board, then the solenoid.  Besides that - there ain't nothing.

If there ain't nothing - - - then it runs on high idle. And if there ain't no oil pressure then it burns up.

The factory designed engine protection system has done - done it's thing.  It burns up on "high idle".  haha. LMFAO.Good luck manSlowhand

Wow you got to be joking.I got a new oil pressure solenoid coming, you got me thinking. I have a manual gauge, but did not look at to see what was going on there. So as soon as my solenoid gets here I will try it again.I let it run for about 10 min. to see if maybe it got wet during the rain we had the night before, thinking maybe it was just wet but it just stays on high idle. When I jumped across the tabs on the solenoid the light stayed green, but when I shut the eng. down and restarted it is when the light would not come on also the eng would not high idle after that. I guess it is ok to start it as long as the manual gauge shows oil pressure?

Reply:IMO a good engine protection system should shut off the engine if there is an indication of low oil pressure.  But with these old SA200's that is not the case I'm afraid.... lolThere is an idiot light.  If that light is on then you can assume there is sufficient oil pressure to continue using the machine.  If that light goes OUT then you can assume there is not enough oil pressure to run the machine.  In that case its your responsibility to actually watch that light and make sure its on.

In my past I have seriously instructed laborers to set there on my rig and watch that light.  If it goes out then shut off the welder and pour in another quart of oil.  I have used up to 16 quarts of oil in one 10 hour day before (blowing out the vent because of being on a steep hill with the engine setting long ways on a truck).  Manual engine protection at its best.

  Been there, done that before.

It does work, but it is a costly (not to mention a messy) operation at best. haha.Along with the Idiot light there is the rev-down circuit control board.  It must have oil pressure above the setting of the electric oil switch (I think that is 8 lbs?) to operate.  If there is no oil pressure to make the electric switch "flip" then there is no power to the board to rev-down the engine.  It will continue to run on high idle because of the mechanical governor system. So if the machine won't rev down, and the idiot light doesn't burn, then you can assume there is not enough oil pressure getting to the engine to continue using it, or the electric oil pressure switch is bad.  A manual oil gauge is invaluable in this situation. So if you're out there welding and when you change rods and your machine doesn't rev-down in 9 seconds (as usual) then you can assume it has no oil pressure.  If the light isn't on you can also assume the same.  Not to mention your battery isn't charging either because the ignition isn't on either. Hope this helps you to understand how it all works.  And I hope it was funny at the same time. lolGood luck manSlowhand

Reply:I am having the same problem my machine will not Rev down at all I just replaced the oil switch I've been having trouble with the oil pressure light so I got a new one and like an idiot I red the wiring diagram wrong and wired the light directly to the oil pressure switch (hot side) and I had to unwire it and then like an idiot I wired it directly to the cold side and tried to start my machine and the light still was not on so I am now going to replace the idle solenoid and replace the PC board I am currently getting power to the PC board and to my idle solenoid but a post from duaneb55 said that I the Idle solenoid is getting power and not sucking in then to replace it so I'm going to do that the machine runs great and welds great it just will not idle down if anyone can help me it will be great fully appreciated  thanks
