old sae 300

hi im new to this site and i have just bought a old sae -300 and i am having problems getting it to arc it has small sparks at the electrode, but it wont weld ???? and as for the pos  neg nutral switch are "ears" on the switch to be tight on the contacts? mine are not even touching ?????
Reply:Polarity select switch must make contact, or welder will not have output or control of output.
Reply:Know of a place you can get parts for it ? I see lots of places for 200's

Reply:I had the same problem on sa200. The problem was the exciter was dirty after I painted the machine. Sprayed up in the hole on the bottom of the cap and paint got on it. Reply:I am green as can be with these, but is there supposed to be sparks on brushs on the exciter ?

Reply:They make something called a commutator cleaning stone. I've used Emory cloth to clean mine in the past. Do this very carefully with machine running, lay the Emory cloth down on the commutator and let it clean ( sand) it until it is shiny. Use even pressure. If you don't want to hold with your finger use a piece of stiff rubber or something. May want to remove the brushes for safety. I bet this is the fix. Reply:Is there a remote swich on, check low rpm
Reply:It has a rubber bladder type for the rpm and it seems to work
Reply:Check the reostat the small one  I have a few of those sae 300s plus a 400 one of them would run and have power at the exciter but the reostat had a broke wire ..I bypassed it with a jumper wire n tada full power ...also to get parts theres a few places on line just search alot of sa200 part sites have some parts for the 300s to
Reply:Thanks for the advice, in my search for. The solution I called a welder repair shop and he sent me diagrams for the wiring on this machine, how do you find out how old it is I checked the Lincoln web site no luck there

Reply:I got ahold of Lincoln today turns out its a 1948, still no luck getting it to weld,
Reply:I use 500 grit or higher to clean the slip rings (commutator) on similar machines when you're just trying to clean up the surface a little.  It's easy to obtain, and yes patience and even pressure are needed.  You need to make sure there are no cracks and grooves in the copper.  Can be done by kicking over the engine until you can get all sides free or if you're careful you can pull the plugs and use the starter to spin the engine while carefully holding the paper in place.Tim

Reply:What voltage do you have at the exciter generator brushes. Engine running. Should be around 115 volt DC at weld rpm. This voltage has to get through the polarity switch and  Control rheostat. see diagram in back of owners manual.I am only getting 60 dc volts at the brushes
Reply:Not sure if this thread is still watched, but I also have a 1948 SAE300 code 1324. It has been in the family for over 40yrs, and have never seen another. Do you have any photos of yours.
