Car explosion...Acetylene tank in trunk

Parts of the car were found over 100-feet from where it was parked.The employee was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, police told the outlet, adding it’s “a miracle he survived.”Investigators say a leaking ox-acetylene tank in the trunk of the car likely led to the explosion, outlets reported. Reply:That very thing happened to a good friends wife back in the 80's.  My friend and his wife had been to dinner the night before and he had stopped on the way to pick up a bottle of acetylene for the next day, he put it in the trunk of the car.  The next day he went to work and remembered the bottle in the trunk.  He called his wife to get it out and put it in his shop.  She opened the car door and the glove box and pushed the trunk open button and the car exploded.  The car was parked next to the house and the blast took that end of the house off.  She lived 3 days.Owner of Fast Leroy's Bar and GrillLiquor up Front, Poker in the Rear

Reply:I had two acetylene tanks in a row with bad valves.With valve closed, gauge would creep up in 5-10 min.The next tank they gave me was a different type (knob type valve, no square socket t-wrench thing needed)andI’ve never had a problem since.Miller a/c-d/c Thunderbolt XLMillermatic 180 Purox O/ASmith Littletorch O/AHobart Champion Elite

It sounds like the relative put the tank in the trunk and the valve probably wasn't closed completely.  It would seem unlikely someone would put a tank in the trunk with a regulator still mounted...although certainly possible.
