About ten years ago I tried to start a business outside my day job with the hopes of it taking off. It never did and I lost a lot of money realizing I should just stick to my day job. I've always been pretty good with my hands; masonry, woodworking, and now metal. Like everyone else here, we want to make a decent living do this, and many of you are (hopefully). So, at the risk of sounding naive, my question is; do you have to be business-minded to make a living in welding? Are there paths to take where all you need are the trade skills? I stopped by the local trade school a few weeks back and bumped into one of the workshop teachers. He said, since he became a journeyman pipe fitter, he hasn't made less then 100k a year. Is this realistic?
Reply:Depends on how much he makes as a teacher. I find it difficult to believe he teaches full time and weld on the side and make substantial money side welding. The worl had to get done and overhead/financial obligation is always present no matter how minimal. Perhaps he has a steady gig of work? 100k+ in no problem. Especially if you go to the work.A business minded person would be trying to get other folk to do the work. The labor is less romantic to the business mind.
Reply:What type of equipment do you own will make difference on what you can do.Can post a basic list of equipment?Dave

Reply:It can take longer to learn biz than the trade. A guy could teach evenings etc. But it takes discipline to do your own.www.urkafarms.com |
