Can someone tell me how people thread using either a Tapmatic, drill press or hand drill and don't snap the tap off???I've snapped taps before, 2 already today in a copper rod and I'm only using a hand tapping wrench, going slowly, backing it out, using cutting fluid. HOW is this done using the above without snapping every tap? Are there qualities of taps and that makes the difference? I've only used big box store taps.I just ordered a YG-1 spiral flute tap from Amazon, will be here tomorrow. Maybe that'll work better?Last edited by JD1; 10 Hours Ago at 04:56 PM.

Reply:Copper or brass is a pain to tap. It seems to create more friction than other materials. As mentioned, spiral flute or spiral point taps are the way to go( as is spiral cut ham for that matter, as that was lunch, Lol). Spiral point for thru holes, as they push the chip forward. Spiral flute for blind holes as they pull the chip away from direction of travel. Above all, avoid cheap carbon steel taps and use high speed steel taps or dies. Lastly if you chip one, dull one or just get a cheap one that doesn't cut right, throw it away, further use is just going to lead to frustration or ruined parts.

Reply:If the part is small you could use a manual hand tap machine which will keep your tap perpendicular…
