Interesting video on cut off wheels

Looks like I have been using the wrong technique frequently. When I cut thicker materials the problems shown when using a wheel like a circular saw are noticeable.  I thought they seemed to last longer when used in a scoring motion. Reply:I saw that video today. I always thought it was common knowledge to use the " scoring" technique. I knew there would be better disc life scoring vs plunging but couldn't believe it was that much.
Reply:Just watched the video and it answered a few questions I've had over the years.I usually do the gouging technique just to establish my line and give me something to follow.  It was just natural to keep gouging since I didn't like how the blade would grab and kick if I really buried it in the material.  I never really paid any attention to how fast the blades wore down, though.  Seeing him get a 10x increase in number of cuts, well that's substantial!I wonder if it holds true when cutting thicker material.
Reply:I stopped watching when he tried the "better" method..  It's sort of like what's the big secret?  Think of when you're dressing a a buffing wheel.  What cleans faster, "cutting" into it with whatever you're using or placing a flat side almost parallel to it?  I can see how he would want to stretch his wheels out, since he's cutting a lot of super thin stuff that's better suited for a plasma.  I figure they're called cut-off wheels for a reason.  Not cutting wheels or metal ripping wheels...

Prep work takes long enough, I value my time spent on measuring and fit up more than making wheels last longer.  That's what plasma is for.Last edited by Weldalittle; 7 Hours Ago at 08:36 PM.

First time you plunge cut with a grinder, and the wheel blows up, gets ripped, or the grinder takes off for the hills.......................you learn to score the cut.
