Hello wanted to share a pic or two of a trailer for my ATV that I built for around the house and hunting. I really enjoy this board and the wealth of information that it contains. I am not a welder by trade at all but I weld quite a bit and have no formal training except trial and error.

Reply:Very nice!  I love off-road trailers built to match the tow vehicle (i.e. Jeep on 35" swampers, trailer on 35" swampers).  You should add a swivel to the neck so it can flex. . . . I'm a Yamaha guy myself, but with a 400 Kodiak. Those that say "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" just don't understand!Fast-Cheap-Reliable:  Pick two.
Reply:I never thought about a swivel neck!!!  Thanks for the kind words
Reply:yeah, looks great.  Judging from the background, I can imagine what you will be hauling around.
Reply:This is exactly what I want to build. Did you have any plans? Also, can you post some more pics of the underside structure? Thanks!  Great work!
Reply:I do not have plans but I will give you any measurement you want and help you out if I can I just built it. The axle is custom built the most difficult thing for me was finding 4 on 4 (american pattern) ATV wheels  but I found them here http://www.4atvtires.com/. the axle with hubs and leaf springs with hanger kit was $150.00.

you can email me if you need more info at   [email protected]

Reply:Great Project! With the nice long tongue on it, you could make that hinge easy and have a dump trailer as well. -Cory
Reply:you could haul a moose out with that trailer. good job.  is that 1' tubing for the rails?
Reply:Yes 2x2x11ga and 1x1x11ga tubing I have a problem over doing things sometimes I wanted it to haul 1000 pounds should be no problem.
Reply:i have that same mop. don't tell me you also mop your garage.   i do mine every sunday.
Reply:Well I epoxied the garage floor and I hose it out and mop it sometimes is that anal?
Reply:Thanks for the extra pics.  What did you weld it with (process, wire/rod)?
Reply:Nice job.  I love working with square tubing.DavidReal world weldin.

When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Nice looking trailer. I also like working with square tube but I found that added care must be taken in designing to prevent rusting from the inside out. In areas of the country that are subject to freezing the tubes collect moisture and then bulge and split.
Reply:Bluduk15=  Lincoln power mig 215 with 035wire I have a Ellis 1600 saw and a ellis 6000 grinder that make life much easier also. Expanded was cut with Thermodynamics cutmaster 38 Plasma cutter. Thanks for the good words on the trailerTriptester I live in the Deep south on the coast in Alabama 3 miles from the beach so freezing is not a issue. But I did spray foam the insides of any verticial tubes completley filling them to avoid water building up and rusting it out. all other tubes have plastic caps on them as not to allow anything inside like mud or water.
Reply:Thats very nice. A friend did the same thing, only his trailer was exactly the size of the quad so he could tow the trailer with the quad on it to his camping or hunting location, then pull the trailer with the quad around the forest.Sweet trailer, looks like you are ready for bow season.
Reply:I considered making mine big enough to haul and or recover another ATV but it really limits the use of the tailer for what it is built for. If the trailer is wider than the ATV you are always looking back and getting hung up on trees. this trailer will be used to recover deer and haul feed into the woods during the off season so it has to go where the ATV goes so it is 3 inches narrower that the ATV.
Reply:Nice Griz and sweet job on the trailer. Should have tied the tow bar into the frame a little further back like above the axle. (constructive critisism only)
Reply:any chance you can post your blue print for this? if not or don't have it , no worriesThanks anywayNice job too

Edit: 'I do not have plans but I will give you any measurement you want"never seen this .. yes pls post the measurements if you have them .. TY

Reply:Nice project.  It is on my list of things to do for this winter.  Is their anything you wish you would have done different?

Reply:I will post some measurement when I can as the trailer is in the woods at my hunting camp. But it is built around the axle make sure you have your ATV wheels and tires becacuse you can have a large offset in the wheels I believe my axle was 35 inches hub face to hub face and  I had six inch offset in each of the wheels which gave me a 47 inch wide trailer and the 4 wheeler is 48 inches wide not including plastic or racks.  The height of the trailer is set by leaf spring travel and tire clearence due to the wheels under design. I purchased a 2000 lbs leaf spring set and ground out the rivits and took 3 leafs out leaving only two total leaf springs to get the suspension to  work with only a max 1000 lbs load. Basicly I can give you measurements but your trailer will have to be built according to the axle and leaf springs as they will dictate your build. I started upside down cut the pieces to weld the leaf spring hangers to and then attached the axle to the leafs and measured ride height cut the four uprights and had already built the squarre box for the bed welded it up and went from there I have found nothing I would do differnt as of yet it has a drop dwon tail gate on barrel hinges that works great.Last edited by worm122; 09-13-2007 at 11:59 AM.
Reply:Great Job man!that looks better than a factory trailerI like the tires but ain´t they in the wrong rotation direction?

Reply:The tires were the wrog rotation during the build but they are correct now.
Reply:Great trailer Worm.  That is going to make hauling bait and stands around the woods alot more fun.  A question I have is concerning prepping the metal for painting: What did you use to eliminate the rust and oils from the steel?  I have used mueratic acid in the past, but it is nasty to work with.
Reply:I prep with acetone and rags and piant with Rustoleum bare metal primer (this is a must) and then paint with Rustoleum paint. I buy it at Lowes by the quart and spray with a HLVP sprayer cheap craftsman model but it works fine. I use red scotch brite pad to prep the surface.I've been browsing this forum all day.  I found this post 28 pages back from the front.  I love the looks of this trailer and will be buying the steel for my own as soon as I can find a set of wheels/tires and the axle/springs.Thanks for posting the pictures of your trailer.
Reply:that is a sweet trailer!!  what was the total cost to build it?   what is the width? i also want to build a trailer like this
Reply:I have about $350.00 in it and about 10 hours of build time. I used it all winter and loved it best thing I ever built and makes my ATV into a truck hard to beat.
Reply:This is an old thread that I am bringin back to the top. I think this trailer looks great. Can anyone explain how you could put a pivot point on this so it could be a dump trailer? Thanks
Reply:Attach the tounge to the underside, center of the trailer body with a fabricated hinge.  This will allow the body to pivot.  Fab up a reciever / clip for the body to set back down on & secure to the tounge.  A trailer hitch pin works good here.
Reply:It's back!!!!!   I still have the trailer and I have hauled well over 1000 pounds in it regulary. It has been the best thing I could have done to make the 4 wheeler usable and really be able to haul stuff.Donnelly Small Engine & WeldingFoley AlabamaLincoln 225 TigLinoln 215 migHypertherm Powermax 65Ellis 1600 sawEllis 6000 belt grinderJD2 Model 4 tubing benderAtlas  12"X54" metal latheLots of large hammers
Reply:outstanding project. you did a great job.did you build your own axle?  or purchase it?  if so, where?
Reply:I purchased the axle from a local trailer company calley Bye-rite trailers in Robertsdale Al. it was custom built and I also purchsed the springs there and the coupler. Reply:Great trailer worm, I intend to scale one like that up a little for a Polaris side by side.  I really like the idea of using torsion axles though, any one have experience with those on a similar purpose trailer?
Reply:I have used torsion axles on an atv trailer and they work great.  The cost is the draw back.  Here in Ak a set of wheels, hubs and bearings will run $370, the tires at over $100 each. Building a trailer with a walking beam axle I spent as much for the wheels & running gear as the metal for the bucket and tounge. I just check etrailer site and the torsion set was priced $380 - 425, without hubs or rubber.  But just weld them to a doubler plate on the bottom of the bucket, quick, easy and ride nice.

Reply:What is the width, length, and length of the tough, on your trailer you built I’m also building a trailer for in my welding class but I don’t really have and plans but I really like your design.
