Brake Lockup

Brakes been locking up intermittently.  Lock/roll/lock/roll/lock.  I thought it was the ABS.Wrongo!!!!!!!!!!!!


  This goes to prove what I always say...…………...it's seldom the electronics...….look at the mechanical side of the issue first.  The spring broke, and the self adjuster cable guide fell down into the drum, and was catching underneath the brake shoes occasionally when the brakes were applied.The shoes are still about half good (I believe, and don't take this to the bank.....these are the original shoes)


There's a bit of damage where the metal pieces were getting sucked under the shoe, but I feel that, why replace them...…….they're still running in a true arc (shrug)

  Gotta few more miles left in them.  Ought to be fine till I get around to replacing them one of these days.

Reply:Had a similar issue with my Jeep recently. The bonded brake shoe pad came UN-bonded...   big mess. luckily the drum was ok.Miller 211Hypertherm PM 451961 Lincoln Idealarc 250HTP 221  True Wisdom only comes from Pain.
Reply:Agree, the shoes are fine.I'm sure there will be others that say "Brake shoes are cheap, replace them" but they are not cheapwhen you have to drive an hour round trip to the nearest parts store plus all the lost time!

Reply:I had one car that the star wheel adjuster would seize up on one side, then fall out, jam in between shoe and drum and lock up at the slightest touch.ABS kicked in then and released the other three brakes, so no brakes at all.Narrowly missed rear ending or crashing into something a few times.This happened 9 -12 months on the regular - but always in the coldest winter day when it was impossible to take a look at it.I got smart and scheduled myself to service them in August each year, wire wheeled and dry spray anti seized graphite sprayed the adjusters.I also pulled the ABS fuse out and put a bit of black tape over the ABS dash light.That stopped that bull****.

Reply:Here is one I chased my tail on for near two months.  One wheel intermittently locking up without brake pedal applied.  I refused to believe it could happen on a linked system until the car was being driven out of the drive and I saw it happen.  Absolutely defied all logic.  Everything and I mean everything was blueprinted. Better than new but had this one wheel lockup and not always the same wheel.  Damn near drove me nuts then my parents were having dinner at the RSA and Dad mentioned how I was going crazy trying to find a fault and an old guy told him it was a warped master cylinder.  Well the master cylinder got pulled and checked, new seals and all was good - for about a month.  Ended up replaced the master cylinder and problem was gone.  Nothing could be measured as wrong.  Over the next 30 years I have encountered the same thing 6 or 7 other times and on one occasion saw it cause a head on.  Had to testify in court on that one.  It makes absolutely no sense, defies logic but it happens.

Reply:ABS systems are designed to revert to regular brakes if there is an ABS fault. We had an Ambulance that had a problem that caused the unit to apply the brakes alternately from right to left making the vehicle very hard to control & uncomfortable. Reply:Luckily, I'm running 94's, and you can just unplug the harness at the RABS valve.  You may lose your speedometer, but it's a simple patch job to run a wire around the connector.On the 1 ton, I wound up plumbing around the valve.  Just a nice simple straight line to the rear brakes.  I wouldn't recommend it unless you're confident in your ability to do a good double flare joint.  IIRC...…...the motor home chassis in this year has the workaround as a dealer upgrade.  At least I read that somewhere

Reply:I have learned a few things over the years.  One is that its a really bad idea to get in a atz whuppin contest with wimmin of any age.
Reply:A trick to these is soak the self adjuster cable with some penetrating spray. They have crimped ends and lots of them corrode and let loose. Simple spray keeps it from happening.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:On the '98 Dodge 4x4 of mine the rear adjusters are garbage. The adjusters came put together with triple metals. Black oxide tube, silverish zinc plated star wheel insert and gold zinc chromate adjuster arm. Maybe reverse the colors of the two zinc jobs but that doesn't matter. One side corroded to a solid brick, the other ran up so tight the brake always moaned on take off. Ordered a complete new set of shoes and piece parts. Same deal, mixed bag of metal and coatings. Had a electric door lock fail right off. Took it out and the same deal. Black oxide plates sandwiching yellow zinc chromate pieces and silver zinc plated rivets. Corroded up. Younger generation doesn't understand the problems mixing metals can cause.
