Metal suppliers have been telling me to expect a sharp rise in prices, anyone else hearing the same thing?
Reply:Mine raised prices on salvaged by a dime and new went up too but not much yet.Sent from my SM-G960U using TapatalkI haven't built anything I can't throw away.  Perfection is the journey.    Mac

Although I don't really keep track of it too closely.................rolled steel is running somewhere around $900/ton right now.  And, if the economy starts kickin'.......look for it to go higher. But, if Biden removes the tariffs placed on imported steel by Trump, the price oughta go down.  Thing is..........there's still steel being imported into this country..........the consumer just picks up the tab on the tariffs (shrug).  Tariffs are not charged to the producer........they're charged to the importer here in the US, and they pass the cost to you.

Reply:The BMG Metals I use in Manassas, Virginia had price increases effective Friday, Jan 1. If I remember right, aluminum went up 9 cents a pound. I forgot how much the steel prices went up. I received a few requests for projects on Saturday, Jan 2. When I called on Monday for a quote, the lady I work with said she was able to slide in the old price. Whether that is true or not, I don't know. I was quoted $3.28 a pound for a 48x96 sheet of 0.25" thick 6061.The steel 1"x1"x1/8" square tube was $1.11 a pound.Millermatic 252 MIGMiller Dynasty 200DX TIGMiller Spectrum 625 PlasmaAltas 12x36 Metal LatheBridgeport Milling Machinewww.psacustomcreations.com

Reply:There have been drastic increases globally in the price of hot-rolled steel — US$1,000 per tonne in the US, US$700 per tonne in Europe and US$650 per tonne in Asia — it said. China Steel has increased the price of hot-rolled steel sheets and hot-rolled steel coils for delivery next quarter by NT$1,500 per tonne.
Reply:Just saw a $10 a sheet raise in expanded metal locally this past couple weeks
Reply:Talked to the guys we use for pipe friday... they said all quotes are back to a 3 day price guarantee.... or maybe less if things really SHTF!!!

So...  get ready to grab your ankles!!!

Reply:I mostly use 16 and 20 gauge metal studs for framing.  Supplier said all metal is up 30% and more increases to follow. They carry CEMCO metal based out of Canada with offices in the USA.
Reply:I use mainly light gauge sheet for plasma cutting.  Got a big shock today.  14 gauge from 55 for 4 x 8 sheet to 70 and 12 gauge from 70 to 98 per sheet.  Was told to expect more sticker shock in the weeks ahead.  Called a metal supplier closer to me and they wanted 92 for 14 gauge.  Had to ask twice for the price as I thought they were quoting a heavier plate.Miller 350 DynastyMiller TrailblazerMiller 625 Plasma Lincoln Power MIGVictor oxy/acetyleneHyperthem 85
Reply:I had been paying .40 cents/lb a month ago and now it's .65 cents/lb for HR plate.
Reply:Funny thing is.................all the steel around here comes from Mexico, comes up the inland waterway.  https://www.swt.usace.army.mil/Missions/Navigation.aspxSo, the phony tarrif, and the "new" NAFTA, didn't do squat for this country.  More crap, and we're payin' the price.  We're paying the same price for Mexican steel as y'all are paying for (maybe, and I mean a BIG maybe)  US steel.
Reply:I also got some 4" 14Gauge C purlin and 4" receiver channel that was definitely Hechen in Mehico but thinking the sheet was domestic.Miller 350 DynastyMiller TrailblazerMiller 625 Plasma Lincoln Power MIGVictor oxy/acetyleneHyperthem 85

Reply:I did just find a guy on Facebook marketplace selling 5x10 sheets of 14g for $100, 5x10 of 11g for $160, and 4x8 sheets of 3/16 for $160. I will most likely stop by and see what I can get from him just to have more on hand Sent from my SM-G930V using TapatalkMillermatic 252 MIGMiller Dynasty 200DX TIGMiller Spectrum 625 PlasmaAltas 12x36 Metal LatheBridgeport Milling Machinewww.psacustomcreations.com

Reply:I have seen increases since early January and the supplier expects more to come.no surprise when the price of everything else started going up since late october, early november in anticipation of the elections results I would guess. we are near 3 bucks a gallon for gas now and had gotten below 2 bucks for a short while in september, early october. my grocery bill has nearly doubled and I expect only worse to come, including rate increases for electricity. I know c-19 has had a impact but I think most of it is a result of folks with money to invest or commodities to sell reading the tea leaves in the bidden tea pot. I hope I am wrong but I doubt if the consumer is going to have anything to celebrate in the remainder of my life time if jobs keep getting deleted at the rate they have been for the last few weeks.
Reply:A few days ago a steel supplier stopped by my shop and we were discussing this very topic. He said one foundry had a fire or explosion or something so it was running at half capacity. then covid took a toll on others. He said something else which I cant remember now shut down another. So just a big ole basket of crap going around sounded like.

Reply:I’ll occasionally buy steel from tractor supply if I need a small piece, especially on a weekend when my metal supplier is closed. Now I’m well aware that TSC is high on their steel prices because that’s not their main gig. Last quote I got from metal supplier for certain types of HRC was barely cheaper than TSC, especially for smaller angle iron. Not sure if that’s necessarily new though since I got back into personal metal fab around May of last year.Current machine: Miller 211Past machine(s): Hobart Handler 190“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants” - Thomas Jefferson
