Picked up a used 38xl at an auction. $75 bucks so not the end of the world if it doesn't work. So far it turns on, AC light comes on, gas light is on. No DC light and it will only strike an arc for a split second intermittently. I'm look at the bag of TD electrodes and tips that came with it and think I may have the wrong ones. Also the ceramic gas ring is burnt pretty good. It came with 9-6501 tips and 9-6006 electrodes. All the info I can find says I should have 9-6501 tips and 9-6506 electrodes. Is this correct? What the difference between the 6506 and 6006 electrodes?
Reply:Not sure if this bit of troubleshooting says anything but with all tips and electrodes installed I get nothing but an intermittent spark and no DC light. With all tips and electrodes removed I can get spark and the DC light is on.
Reply:You are correct 6500 goes with 6500 and 6000 with 6000.A 6506 and the 6006 electrode are different lengths and diameter Electrode, tip and swirl ring must be used in sets of the same series. Both will work with your plasma. I am guessing that if you can get a complete set of the same series consumables the torch will fire. DC light is going out because the tip and electrode are shorted together. There is only one retaining cap for both series. The 6000 series were lower amp and the 6500 series had low and higher amp.each nozzle/ tip is rated for a specific ampere. Plasma units cut best went the machine amp setting matches the amp rating of the nozzle. High amp nozzles have a larger hole and will cut but because the plasma stream is larger diameter it does not cut as well as the correct nozzle for the amps used. The pilot arc may not be stable.
