So going through our company's standard operating procedure test that is give to new applicates. A question/debate arose about a ground flush weld symbol. Look at the picture. If you saw the picture on the left and were asked "What the darkened line under the weld symbol indicates, what would you answer?

Reply:I would say the first one is flush weld on top, just left as welded no excess reinforcement. On the second symbol,  if you want it ground flush on the bottom side you should have the 'G" beneath the line so the weld would be ground flush on the bottom since the arrow is pointing to the bottom of the weld and the symbol is on the bottom which is the arrow side of the line.Mind you it's been years so I could be full of it too LOL ............Mike
Reply:I would contact the draftsman/engineer how made drawing and clear instructions. They come some thing off wall sometimes. It save money too.FYI They come new symbol every year and old symbol is just same thing. When I first started it was a wall chart with all symbols and very clear, today it takes book and not so clear.Dave

Reply:Normally it would say grind or maybe they use a G now. Arrow side is always on the bottom of the reference line if I remember correctly. Sometimes there is a tail on the reference line that can show more info. In the first one I think it means flush but with no other info. don't know if the weld should just be flush or it should flush by using another means like grinding or machining. It has been a long time for me too since I've had to reference blueprints with welding symbols.
Reply:The line either way is a profile symbol in the as welded condition. If someone mechanically flushes out the weld they are in violation of the intent. Looks like a tig weld application to me to keep the square bevel joint flush. I have see similar welds where the welds were ground flush without permission and were rejected.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR"

Reply:I seen draftsman/engineer put symbol out book and not what want or high cost to do the job. I found call and find out want the really want. Dave

Reply:I think the debate is that you shouldn't have to ask for clarification, it should be very clear on the blueprint. What if the blueprints came from another country or something, are you going to wait for who knows how long to get that clarification.
