Master Welder ?

I've been in the welding trade for 28 years & never seen a master welder. I was looking on another forum (fishing) and ran across this dude that he was finishing up his schooling to be a master welder. Is this really something new or has the school blown smoke up his butt?
Reply:it may just be the name of the course taught by the school.  like you could could take intro, advanced, and master.  different levels of skill, time and money needed for each.

Reply:The military uses NEC codes they are across all branches of the military.
Reply:AWS certifications for different levels of skill are:  Class I     Beginner  Class II    Advanced  Class III   ExpertThese certifications can only be attained thru a AWS certified instructor (usually thru a teaching institution)  and each level of training must follow specific guidelines of didactic and practical learning for each different level.  Not only are there written exams that must be passed, but the student must show proficiency in all different types of welding including SMAW, GTAW. GMAW, Oxy-Fuels, FCAW, AAC, and PAC.  These processes must be passed on carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum as applicable.  The Class II written test takes a full 6 hours to complete and covers almost every aspect of welding including Code work.  AWS also has certifications for instructors and  inspectors.
