New to the forum here. I really enjoy welding and fabricating of all types.I have a question regarding my latest welder. Its a Linde 110-087, 250 Amp Tig/Utility Welder. Hope this is the correct place to post this. (please move it if it isnt)First, is in regards to wiring this up. Currently the welder has a length of 10-3 cord running into an elec. box bolted to the welder. This cord then runs 2 hot leads (230 volts) to a double throw switch, and the single "ground" wire to the body of the welder. My outlet, is basically a 3 pole dryer type outlet, I have wired this up with the two hot leads from the welder, running to the two hot leads on the outlet. (these would be the two wires coming off the double pole circuit breaker, red and black in romex) But the dryer outlet has the white wire running to the 3rd pole and the ground attached to the outlet box. If I run the 3rd wire from the welder to the 3rd pole on the outlet, I would be attaching the white wire from the outlet to the body (ground) of the machine. Is this acceptable? (did I loose anyone?)Secondly, was Linde bought out by another welder company? If so by whom?Lastly, whats a good tig attachment for this welder for use by a semi professional welder. I havent done any tig yet, but I am really interested in trying it. Looking for a reasonable cost unit to get started. I also have a miller matic 175 I use for light jobs at home and a larger miller 250 mig for work and a engine driven Lincoln ideal arc for portable jobs.I am looing for a 100 or 200 amp scott welder if anyone has one they would like to part with.I look forward to spending some time here.Doc.Some of the things I do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, or possibly deported. To put it another way, don't try this at home.Look at the stars whenever your can. That light travelled a long way to get here, dont let it go to waste on some patch of asphalt.
Reply:If the outlet is fed from the main entrance service panel then you hook the grund to the white wire. But, that circuit isnt likely heavy enough for this machine. You will need a 50A circuit. You should have a number 8 wire if you are using romex to feed this machine, the 10 cord is fine on the machine, but I would also use a welder recept and plug. Dryers and range recpts are different.Last edited by Sberry; 11-01-2004 at 11:51 PM.www.urkafarms.com
Reply:I do plan to upgrade my romex wiring and my circuit breaker. I know its too light for a welder that can pull over 80 amps of Ac current. While for the most part this welder wont see any output amps over 150, I still want to make sure I have at LEAST 50 amps of AC service. Plug upgrading will take place as well. I just want to make sure the welder is working correctly. Thanks, Doc.Some of the things I do would cause a person to get hurt, expelled, arrested, or possibly deported. Reply:Linde was bought by ESAB- a huge Swedish Conglomerate. Those bright yeller things Jesse James uses on Monster Garage are descended from Linde welders.ESAB dealers should be able to get some Linde replacement parts. When you say "Tig attachment" what do you mean?A torch? If so, I recommend CK. They are reasonably priced, sold most everywhere, and last forever. Be aware, Tig sucks up the money. Air cooled torch- maybe 150 bucks- then add in tungstens, ceramic cups, argon tank, flowmeter. But if you do much aluminum, or even a lot of steel, you will want a watercooled torch- also 150 bucks or so, but then you need some kind of cable cover, as the hoses are made of plastic that melt easily if you happen to touch them with a hot welding rod, or drape them over a recently welded piece. Then you need a radiator. And for either torch, a foot pedal is nice. Torches are interchangeable for any brand machine. Same with radiators. Foot pedals need to be compatible, and I dont know if you could run a miller or lincoln with your linde. Ask at your local welding supply. My guess is you could get one to work.
