well theres this hinge on one of the cabinets in my kitchen, and it snapped. i dont know what type of metal it is,on the part where it snapped its like gray and kinda sparkley .. i was thinking maybe cast.. but i dont know
Reply:Die cast aluminum/zinc alloy???? Check it with a magnet.
Reply:can it be welded?
Reply:Nah, not really. Especially if it's the 'die-cast' lotech mentioned. I just can't imagine a cabinet type hinge that would even be big enough to get a work clamp on. I've done quite a little cabinet work and messed with a lot of the standard cabinet hinges. My bet is that they aren't made of weldable steel/iron. They are either soft and mushy metal or a one time bend and it's broke type. But hey, it's broke, so no loss. Give it a shot and you'll be the go to guy on hinge repair.
Reply:maybe Pewter?
Reply:Sounds like it is what is called " pot metal" or "white metal". I' m not really sure whats in the stuff or more to the point, whats not in the stuff. Weldablity is basically non existent but as Sandy stated it's no good as is so give it a shot, but plan on buying a new one. Let use know what happens. |
