If I were to test someone on his TIG welding skills would you have any suggestions? Meaning, what would that most difficult to do things with TIG be to check a welder's skill and his control? Yes only skill and control!!Thanks guys.
Reply:Full penn on thin s.s. pipe. TIG 18 ga aluminum plate and make it look good especially in corners. Weld a razor edge to something much thicker.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:razor blade to railroad track
Reply:i agree with all the top posts. i would like to see the ability to freehand in all positions and weld 20 ga. stainless with very little or no distortion.Last edited by j8khansen; 07-07-2005 at 07:50 PM.
Reply:Put a piece of pipe in 6G and have a look at the root,c both carbon and stainless.Cheers Stephen
Reply:The razor blade sounds good. Where exactly on the razor blade? Thanks again in advance guys.
Reply:the blade...the tip, there narrowest thinnest part CHRIS
Reply:Im with wirehunt here on this one, Carbon would be cheaper to test tig skills. Have them put the root in, and look at that, it should be about a dime deep and nice and uniform, Now if he/she knows what they are doing they will know how to set the machine to not suck the root back up with the Hot pass. On a S/S test they would have to use solo flux or purge it, but they should know how to do that too.
Reply:Our machinist asked me to weld the razor edge to a piece of 1/2 in s.s round stock. I have to admit that my first attempt wasn't 100% by after figuring out that I had to apply almost all the the heat to the s.s, it went fine on the second attempt. Odd things they ask of me sometimes.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Brain, The edge of the pool just touching the blade, and I mean just?Stephen
Reply:Yeah... He wanted the double sided blade to stick out so that it could cut though some kind of plastic inside of a mold. If the weld was too big, it wouldn't cut it correctly.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom. |
