I am new to welding, having bought a MIG welder, and I was wondering if you must wear the same mask or goggle setup when welding with a gas torch welder?
Reply:I dont.  For gas (I am assuming here you mean oxy/ace welding) I have a #6 or #7 lens in goggles.  The mask I use for welding with electricity is a shade #9-#14 auto darkening mask, but I keep it above 10 always.  I am pretty sure you dont want to use a pair of goggles, for reasons of both uv protection and facial protection from sparks.  Get yourself a cheap standard hood.  If you are talking about welding with shielding gas using the wire feed welder, versus flux core, that is a different strory.  The same "Welding" helmet can generally be used for both, providing that they are somewhere in the shade 10-12 range.  Mig requires a little more shading, if I remember right.Two answers to one question.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Howdy Indy...Fer MIG welding you must use a hood just like you would with regular stick(arc) welding. Use at least a number 10 shade filter...you use higher number shade filter the higher you go up in amperage. And DONOT get in the habit of tacking or even doing short welds without a hood on...the so called professional welders you see on TV doing that are just setting a bad example and not using common sense...you only got one pair of eyes so protect them. You'll also want to get a good pair of safety glasses to wear under yer hood and especially fer when yer grinding. Hoped this helped.Rod"Failure is not an option"

Reply:That was NOT a dumb question.  Your vision will will thank you for the rest of your life!  So will your face, far too many sparks and molten metal flying around.I got an auto shade mask so I dont have to take aim then lower the mask and try not to move the gun in the dark.
