hi guys I have been hearing bad things about mig welding is it true that mig is just not a good weld.a welder told me that it just dose not hold up long because it rust from the flux it use's.I use stick and tig right now but was looking at getting a mig welder for getting into tight spaces. I have never used or seen a mig in action.but is tig and stick better then mig?thanks
Reply:Mig welding is great for the right things, as long as you have it set up right. Rust from flux?most mid range mig welders dont use flux- so that is baloney.Cheap 110volt mig welders use flux core- it is a cheat that enables them to get more penetration for the same amount of amps, but it makes a big mess. If you dont clean up well after welding, yeah, it will still be messy. And really big mig welders use flux core to weld 1" plate- but I doubt that is what he is talking about- as most of the earthmovers, bulldozers, and trucks welded this way are some of the best industrial products made in the USA.A good sized mig welder, like say a Millermatic 250, is a great tool to have in the shop. Not sure about tight spaces- I can weld in a tight space with a cut down arc electrode, a tig torch with a shorty back, or a mig gun. Mig is good for quick mid range material welds- I use my mig to build stuff where it can look like it was welded, in material 1/8" thick to about 3/8" or so. Anything 1/2" or thicker, we usually stick weld, and anything that needs to look purty, we tig weld. But tig, mig, stick, gas, and spot welding are all the same "better" depending on your machine, and what you need to do. No one of them is "better" than another. Just different.

Reply:RoosterBoy, sometimes with a mig weld the edges of the weld wont be as flat or as blended as they are with stick. This  can sometimes look like the edges are rusting out when they really are not.
