is there a trick to welding legs to the bottom of a steel table and keeping them straight along both axes?i use a square and fuss around and still have problems with deflection.thanks
Reply:You are going to always have warpage or deflection when heating steel, the more you do it the better you will start to get a feel for compensating.  as in lean the piece just a bit in the opposite direction of the way it will pull when welding.  It also helps sometimes to weld one side then the opposite side working your way around.  it will counteract the forces.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:When welding on legs, it helps to clamp or tack a truss or a brace to the leg before welding it up.-Heath
Reply:Also, the leg will pull towards the last weld.
Reply:Howdy!  you can do the same thing as we do in construction, temporarily place two pieces of angle iron in the two axis the legs move, then grind off the weld bits left after cutting them off.  The higher on the leg you temp weld it, the more accurately it will help.  Also, I have read in Lincolns welders bible about preventing some distortion in joints bye placing pieces of scrap welding wire between the pieces to be welded.  The weldment squishes the thin welding wire, instead of distorting the parent material.  I haven't tried this, but it's an idea   Happy welding!  Brian Lee  Sparkeee24
