I O/A-welded a (small) jig of 3/32" steel. took the wire wheel on the angle grinder and removed as much of the scale as I could, but there are places I can't get to. Can scale be removed chemically? if so, is it advisable and with what chemicals? - Mike
Reply:Hydrochloric acid, preferably called muriatic acid. Over in the pool and/or tile section of any good hardware store or big box store. Runs about 40% and sells by the gallon. As you can imagine, it "eats" everything but glass and plastic and will even etch some low quality glass. Spills are a no-no and of course eyes and body parts must be well protected. Flushing required.
Reply:I use a sand blaster to remove mill scale prior to welding.J P Streets Welding LLC |
