I have nice little project on my hand this winter, I am customizing my old 93 CBR f2 and in doing so am welding a custom subframe on.  The subframe is made a round pipe that is welded to the frame.  I will be cutting this off and welding on new pipe, of the same diameter, to make a subframe that fits my new tail. The part where I have to weld is exposed and I would like it to look nice.  I can lay a nice bead (nice to me) so that is not my concern.  I was wondering if I can cut right where the subframe is currently welded.  Actually cut through the weld - I know this is a pain but still. If I do this can I then weld the new frame on to the old weld?  Basically, can I weld to an old existing weld, or is it better to just leave a little pipe in front or cut the old weld completely off and just weld to clean pipe?  I don't want to cut behind the weld because really I cant, and I don't want to have two welds right there because that is just ugly.  Sorry I don't have pics, my bike is taken apart in my "shop" (my storage unit - they are gonna love when I start grinding and welding ) which is not open right now.
Reply:Grind everything back to smooth again. You might be welding over an old weld, and you might not, but it won't matter.
Reply:Cool.  Thanks for the quick reply.
Reply:cbrf23,Sandy is right, but if it we're me I would try to cut or gring right thru the center of the old weld so that what you end up with is the same connection that it was when it was built. hope this helps.
Reply:in my world, were used to having to weld on welds.  Sometimes its multipass.  Sometimes its  arepair, othertimes well I think I already summed it up.  Anyway, just clean between passes, or in the case of a crappy weld, clean it as best as you can of topside contaiments.  if its really bad might want to brind it down smooth so you get a better bead.  Otherwise weld is weld.  and weld shouldnt be any differnt than base unless to say maybe a pinch better.  Otherwise youve got good advice.  But reember that most welding thicker than 1/4 or 3/8 inch is usually multipassed which aint really in all honesty differnt from what your doing.   Good luckCHRIS
