Im Trying To Find Out If There Are Any Instructional Videos Or Books Out There On Hardfaceing And If So Were I Would Look.
Reply:Hardfacing boils down to sitting on a stool and trying to stay awake. What are you trying to hardface?
Reply:Most rod suppliers have pamphlets that are instructive on hardfacing.  Much depends on the application.  You have to choose the correct material to lay down and decide on the most efficient pattern according to the soil or rock encountered.
Reply:And it pays to put a buffer layer down before the main hardfacing.Stephen
Reply:wirehunt, can you go a little further with that please? I don't get your meaning. Thanks.

Reply:carney, I dont know any links but have done a ton of hf . Stoody makes many types of hf rods, impact, abrasive and more. Lincoln makes Lincore55 which is a fair abrasive wire. Goggle them and you might get what you want. I  run lines and squares perpidiculer(?) to the wear marks caused by the dirt. Keep your lines about an inch and a half apart and make the beads kinda cold. you are actually using a welding process to apply hf material. Try to avoid mixing the weld metals too much
Reply:You might try this site for starters.  Most electrode manufactures have info sheets.  In this case call up one of the hard facing electrodes and download the pdf sheet of info.  It gives amperages and applications.http://www.hobartbrothers.com/product_info.aspHard facing is a bit of a science,  If you put the wrong stuff on it can peel off.  You can waste electrode putting it where it is not necessary.  Years ago I was shown a bucket that was ruined by someone trying to hard face and extend the life but they didn't get it right.  The foreman was looking at major surgery or just running it to destruction and then replacing it.  Follow the manufacturers instructions.  If they say preheat do it exactly as outlined.  If they tell you multiple layers will not work believe them.  If they tell you to butter the surface with some sort of stainless rod as a cushion under the hard surface do it.  Hardfacing can extend the life of your equipment and pay for its cost many times over if done correctly.
Reply:im trying to lern to do things like dozer blades and backhoe buckets, high impact and high abrasion
Reply:This is the blerb from the local rod supplier weldwellIn there they talk about the buffer layer, I think you guy's call it buttering?Stephen
Reply:Carney, as far as hoe buckets, an 'x' pattern always worked good for me. 'cause it traps the dirt inside the x and wears dirt on dirt instead of dirt on metal. On the sides of dozer blades, probably the same will work. As far as rod to use I've always had good luck using "ranite" (brand name) and they also make a build up rod since they recomend a max of 2 passes with HF rod
