Hey guys, im new to the forum and its great i get lost here for hours on end reading and learning as much as i can, thanks for all the great posts! My Question is...I am getting ready to buy a tig machine, I tend to prefer miller, I have a miller 210 and 135 migs. I also have a lincoln 135 mig and it works very well.  I am new to tig and i am looking at the miller 180 sd and the lincoln 185 precision.  As far as i can tell the machines are fairly comprable except the lincoln has the pulser and it can be turned up higher and down lower in the amperage ranges.  I want to be able to do aluminum and i dont need to be able to do really thick aluminum with tig because i have a spoolgun for the 210 and it works very well, just not on thin aluminum.  Is there better machines for the money? Is it mostly preferance? As of now the lincoln is more enticing as it will do thinner metal.  Thanks!
Reply:It seems you would want the lincoln, based on your stated needs.  I think you just need to paint it blue when it arrives.  Oh yeah!  Welcome to the forum.Last edited by smithboy; 10-20-2005 at 10:06 AM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:Well I went through this same problem a good friend of mine has the lincoln precision tig and I had used it once in a while and I wanted a tig really bad so I decided to buy one but the source i was using to get it could only get Miller which was fine by me. When I used the Lincoln I tried the autopulse which is a cool feature but for my needs it was just a option i wouldnt have used much so Its kind of company preference since you already have a lincoln mig and 2 Miller migs might as well have a Lincoln tig to go along with the 135mig. Reply:How do you like that miller 180 boogerweldz?  I am with you on the pulse, not really needed but is a nice feature.  Mainly i like the fact that the lincoln turns down to 5 amps vs the miller is minimum of 10 amps.  Hows the Miller on really thin metals?  My supplier told me 16-18 gauge would be the thinnest i could weld with the Miller 180.  I am sure a lot has to do skill level and practice too though.  I do enuff thin sheet metal that its important to me.  He told me the Miller 250 would weld soda cans(as an example) if you were skilled enough and it goes down to 3 amps so its closer to the lincoln but its also way to much money for me at this time.   Thanks for the replies guys!
Reply:well I love it so far I havent really gone down into thin sheet metal yet I worked over some thin exhaust tubing and its around 16 gauge??? I think not sure exactly but it does just fine I am still learning the basics on how to use it. I know aluminum is giving me fits. I still think its personal preference I have used them both and they both do really well I just dont think I am ever gonna use my machine down at 10 amps or below. I am getting into 4x4 chassis fab start building some turbo systems for a future projects and just wanted the ability to weld chromoly so far so good I have spent the last week in the garage 4 or 5 hours a night welding with the miller and I like it alot just get a 200cfm or larger argon cylinder I have a 200 and it seems fine but my buddy with his lincoln has maybe a 125cfm and if you do alot of aluminum it takes more argon so the tank runs out faster or thats what i was told.GregLast edited by boogerweldz; 10-23-2005 at 11:39 PM.Miller Synchowave 180SDMiller Millermatic 175Century model 1941ANu-tec 35 Plasma
Reply:What kinda turbo project you going to do?  Thats what i am lookin to get into with my next project.  I want a 1966 chevy nova thats gonna be atleast a single turbo, hopefully twin.  Maybe a procharger too though......so much easier to tune, least for me.  I just sold a supercharged mustang.  Mmmmm I love boost . Anyway kinda off topic so sorry, but thanks for the welding reply and goodluck with the future projects.

Reply:what are you making out of 1/64 steel elder?  Good point on the amperage settings, thanks.
Reply:I work in the aviation repair industry as a welder. I was actually  modifying a non structural part called a edge protector, gets riveted on the skin of aircraft around the corners of the cargo bay area, is suppose to protect skin from getting dinged up.They also have what they call scuff plates on the threshold areas of the cargo bays and entry doors that do the same job, those are usually .040 titanium ( I weld these all the time as well as they always crack out ) Airline manufacturers have the mind set to make everything as thin as possible to save on weight
Reply:Sounds like a pretty fun job!
Reply:Stick with MILLER, Lincoln is having finance/loss of market share problems.Miller is First Class, Lincoln is white trailer trashJust my opion
