I've done a little welding previously, on the ground level, but nothing like what I am intending to do.Basically, there is some precast concrete flooring (Hollowcore- 20 feet up) that needs to be welded to the structural steel beams. Its already sitting there. The Hollowcore has embedded plates in the ends, which get welded to the tops of the beams.I'm thinking it won't be difficult to weld them. I just want to confirm the type of rod I will use. 7024??Any input would be appreciated.thanks
Reply:Jim, 7024 would be good for the flat position and is a high deposition rod. It may suffice, but I would say IM rather partial, and if your regulated by code you will probably find 7018 is appropriate. Again im partial to 7018 for this regardless of all other reasons. Its a low hydrogen rod, great for structural applications. Base metal should be as clean as possible, however, same goes with any of the rods with the expception of 6011/10. Hope this helps. Oh, the 7018 is an all position. Run it vertical up, overhead, horiztonal and flat. No vertical down though. ANd is moisture sensitive, therefore youll want to buy a new box, small if fine, and only open it right before youre ready to start welding, or if you hae a rod oven. The plastic dry boxes helps a lot. Good luck!IF it Catches...Let it Burn
