Well I'm in high school and I'm really wanting to get into the welding trade...but i need to get pointed in the right direction..i have questions about what i do to be a licensed welded and where to go..Does anyone know where their are schools in Ontario or how to find them...i have been searching everywhere for a school close to where i live... (Thunder Bay, ON)or what would be the best way to get my welding licenses..Thanks
Reply:What type of welding are you thinking about doing?
Reply:i was think about mig...but acr seem to be used more
Reply:Skoal, I was lucky enuff to start my welding career in highschool. They had somewhat of a metal shop class and welding was just a part of it. Then I went on to get jobs that had welding as a minor part of the work. Took me 18 years to be where I am which is being self employed and having my own weld shop. If you were to ask me , at your age, I would find a technical college that was strickly a welding arts school. A place where you can actually get a degree in metal joining. Not just get certified in a particular process but a place that teaches you ALL aspects of welding and to graduate as a certified welding inspector. Become the experts expert! Thats what direction I would head in if I was your age. I know there are a few schools here in Ohio but as far as in Canada , you'll just have to find something on the internet. Or I am sure theres handfulls of other members that will know . THats just my two cents....Johnny
Reply:Try your local college for information.http://www.confederationc.on.ca/welding/This program would get you a basic welding ticket. CWB stands for Canadian Welding Bureau which is the certifying authority in Canada. If you search their site you will find a list of certified companies in your area. If you want an early start and you are serious you might try getting a weekend or after school job cleaning up and doing labour work.If you want to advance in the trade you cannot have enough math training in high school. If you have a good handle on Trigonometry it will help you doing layouts and developments. Basic computer skills will also help since many welding machines are computer controlled or fully automatic requiring some simple programming skills. There are many areas related to welding. there is always a demand for mechanics who can weld, millwrights who can weld, and even carpenters who can weld. Don't close any doors early in your career.
Reply:all i can tell you is to keep an open mind and learn all the typs of welding you can the open mind part is beacuse you run into weldors that will tell you that there is only one way to weld and its there way so dont be to suck on one type of welding to try it a new wayChuckASME Pressure Vessel welder
