A constant voltage power source is direct current and is for gas metal arc welding. If you hooked up a tig torch on the negative side and made a scratch start, could you tig weld with this method? I have actually asked other welders and people at the welding sales. They say it won't work, but not why. I just never took my torch off my big miller drooper to try it.Will it work? If not, why? Thanks in advance.

Reply:Has any one ever tried, and what was the result? Why won't it work?
Reply:I have pondered this question before. I am aware it will not work. I am not really sure of why. I will see what I can come up with. Tommorow is my last day of school. I graduate with an Associates of Applied Sciences in Welding Technology on Wednesday...YAYAYAYAYa. I will try to remember to ask the prof. tomorow. See what Answer I get.IF it Catches...Let it Burn

Reply:Riley, back to your question, I wish I knew the answer, it can't be that difficult to explain! All I can say is I looked at a volt amp curve for a typical CV power supply and the curve shows that at a normal TIG voltage of about 10 volts, the amperage is something like 300 or 400 amps? Right now I don't have a clue how it would work, and I look forward to reading an answer I can understand. Thanks for asking the question.P.S. Congratulations Tx, a great accomplishment, keep going if you have the opportunity, we'll be addressing you as Professor Redneck.
Reply:I hope TxRedneck didn't forget to ask the professor about that today. I bet somebody knows the answer. I actually called a miller rep about that a long time ago. All he said was that it won't work. Maybe it is a welder manufacturing conspiracy to sell more tig machines. Just kidding about that. HaHa |
