There is a couple differences from Mig and Flux. Mig uses a gas sheild and flux provides it own sheild. I have noticed that the mig wire is a lot cheaper than flux. I know that Mig you would have to buy gas and rent a tank. Flux you would have to spend more for the wire. Can you only use fluxcord welding only for steel. Plus where would you rent a tank and how much would i be looking at to rent a tank+buy gas. I know there a range of costs for different gas. What would be better to use and what would be less costly?
Reply:You can usually buy smaller tanks that are suitable for most hobby migs.  Used, they go for around a hundred bucks and up.Check your local welding supply houses to get the rates on rental versus purchase.  They can also sell you a tank.  Most of the MIG welders on this forum will probably recommend that you use hard wire and gas unless you're welding outside on rusty metal - then use flux cored. The type of gas that you use depends upon the metal that you're welding.  If you can provide more info about your expected projects and materials, folks can provide you with recommendations accordingly.
Reply:Yeh, I am in favor of being set up for both GMAW and FCAW.
Reply:If you are looking at price using Solidwire with gas ( C02) VS. Flux with out.  You also have the remember that solid will burning hotter.  You can also fluxcore with  gas ( C25 ) ......very expensive compared to C02.  But fluxcore with C25 you will have a better looking weld.  Flux by it self will have LOTS of splatter, but with gas cuts that down.  And if you are thinking about doing SS you are better off using C02.  Before you buy or rent anything, I would sit down and think about what you will be welding the most.  Just my 2 cents.
Reply:I would be welding mostly Mild Steel and alunimun. I have been looking at some welders on the net looking at prices. I probly will get something that can do mig and flux cord and i'll see if i can buy a small tank i don't need anything big. I've seen some argon welding tanks 20 cf brand new selling for about 70$ cadLast edited by Bikespot; 05-13-2006 at 12:44 PM.
Reply:You will need gas to MIG the aluminum. Check around, most places will rent you a bottle and then you just pay for the gas.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:Yah after i starting thinking i figure out that in 3 mins of welding you would use about 1 cf of gas. I'll talk to this welding supply place that is close to me ask them what they have and prices.
