If so what kind of rod should I use?
Reply:Oxy acetylene?   Yes.  The proper rod would be a RG series rod.  For instance, RG-40 or RG-60 rods.Traditionally a common sheetmetal process, used in many muffler shops till the widespread use of wire.  Was even used in thicker materials in early day before more understandings of arc, and greater acceptance mostly due to the use of flux coated rodsHope this helpsIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:If you can't get the RG rods, there is no reason you can't use a TIG rod.  I just bought some rod today.  I had a choice of RG45 and ER70S2.  I went with the ER70S2 because I felt like trying something new.  I believe RG60 makes a better looking bead than RG45, it's smoother and lays down a little flatter.
Reply:fokia1008Oxy is the required method in much of aviation. The FAA first allowed tig in homebuilts and in some repairs 0n tube and rag planes in the late 90's. It is generally accepted today but you run into some inspectors who are not happy to sign off anything other than O/A.mark
Reply:Used metal coat hangers before to weld car bodies with oxy acetylene  before, if it works don't knock itsome might say its imposible

Reply:I don't see the reason to use coat hangers.  A pound of 1/16th inch rod TIG or OFW costs about $5.  A pound of coat hangers would probably cost you close to $15.

Reply:I used O/A and bailing wire to weld up thin wall electrical conduit for the frame on my recumbent bike, over 25 years ago.  After 20 years of regular use, during warm months, the crank bracket twisted off.  When I checked the welds holding the bracket, I was pretty surprised that they had held up as long as they did.  None of the other welds have failed.  I redesigned the attachment of the bracket, and fused it in position with my mig.  It'll never come off, again.
Reply:Originally Posted by TxRednecki would have also mentioned this, but again chose to leave well enough alone.   Used the coat hangers, work great for what you use them for if you understand what their limits are.  Simply put, great for no critical areas.  Sheet metal work around the house and farm most of the time applys.  PErsonally cant think of an example where it couldnt.  Problem gets when we make generalizations, particularly when were not intending to, but others assume those generalizations and we find folks getting into trouble with less than complete information.  But yes, I have used the coat hanger, and they are essentially an RG-45 rod.   Need to be free of paint.  Copper fine, paint bad.  Ive done plenty of exhausts for friends with the coat hanger.   Works great cause its free and accessible.  Ive never bought o/a rod for myself.  Ive also used it to weld up mailboxes.  Worked fine.  But I wouldnt build a trailer or a building with a coat hanger either.  But to weld up a piece of auto body, body not frame, the hanger would also be more than great.  Course this goes back to a time wtih cars were made with thicker material, its hard not to make a warpage mess with a torch.  GMAW is so much better for body work when using a welding machine
Reply:I guess you guys know a lot more about "coat hangers than I . When i was a starting apprentice , our instructors told us to NEVER use coat hangers . Too much carbon, they said. & if you are DESPARITE , & in a life or death situation , at least heat them RED hot , let them cool , before using . I asked what to use ,if not "proper rod" , they said "bailing wire or soft tie wire " ,or scrape the flux off of 6010,6011,7018, etc. I been lucky , i guess . NEVER needed to use coat hangers .
