Never welded aluminum, yet, but I caught this show that was selling this aluminum type brazing rod called alumaloy.  Any experiences with this? What do you guys think?
Reply:Hmmmm  ill have to get back on to ya on that one.  Did they mention what you braze it to?  obviously alum, but did it say what alum to?  Hmmm   Thats interesting  IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Ok,  so Ive found the website  Ill do more research as I find it...though I doubt ill actually use the product.  It appers to be capable of use with a propane torch.  I would prefer mapp personally.  They have two other products one for cast and one for steel.  So hmm  http://www.alumaloy.net/IF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Sadly, I have tried it and it didn't work at that well.   I was attempting to make speaker boxes out of aluminum light housings.    According to the instructions, you're supposed to be able to apply it with a plumber's torch.  Nah, didn't happen.   I had to go out and get a bottle of MAPP gas.  It got plenty hot and melted the rods, but even with all the SS wire brushing, I couldn't get the pieces to stay stuck together.   Once the "weld" cooled, it got brittle and the slightest bump broke the bead free of the base metal.   I'm sure was mostly due to operator error, but I'd still like my $9.99 back. There are no small projects
Reply:Imagineer,  I gotta admit I serious doubt it was operator failure.   It could have been, but this seems alil hard for me to eat.   I dont know....just my two centsIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:I had the same experience as imagineer with that stuff.  I've actually tried a few of the supposed alumaloy or aluminum flux products.  What I've determined from buying them is that they are A) a waste of money B) highly toxic to breathe when brazing with them C) completely falsified in relation to their capabilities.  Hope that helps ya out, I would recommend getting a little dragster 85 TIG instead and use it to weld a whole bunch of stuff.
Reply:I have to say Ive heard about these sorts of things over the years from others.  Never fails they are not worth the shipping they are sent in.  They are overpriced...even if theyd work.  I guess its fly by night???  and they dont care if anyone dont like the product...they make enough to fool us and then dont are or something I dont know.  Im thinking partly they are going on the inexperience of someone to say, ah heck its my own lack of knowledge thats making this not work.  And then they have made their buck and you dont send it back as they claim you can.  I would also bet my last paycheck theyd give you so much hassle too.  Maybe not...and at the rate im expecting they wouldnt need to.   ITs like these companies the computer ones wiht mail in rebates.   Im sure I could start a thread on that and guys like smithboy would jump right in with stories.  But my dad sees this a lot most ppl dont even bother with the mail in rebate..and now even if you do the companys are trying to pretend like you dint...wen you quesiton them, they say oh its in processing...a few days later the rebte check is in your mailboxIF it Catches...Let it Burn
Reply:Sorry to hear that the stuff doesn't work very well.  I really get a kick out of the monotone voice of the gal in the infomercials though.I'm a man.But I can change. If I have to.I guess...
Reply:I have some of that stuff.  It's awesome for reairing holes in aluminum cans. Repairing anything thick I found to be nearly impossible. YOu have to put sooooo much heat into the base metal before the rod would take to it. So using propane or map had its limits.

Reply:If there is a market for repairing holes in the bottom of aluminum cans then this product is it.  That's how me and my neighbor got suckered into buying some at a car ralley.  The guy punchs a hole in the bottom of the can (which is dished) and then fills it....wala.  The problem is it only works on aluminum cans.  I've tried and tried to use up what I bought on other projects and eventually just threw it in the trash. Save your money and buy a welder.
Reply:yep they sell it at the fair here, works on beer/pop cans. but when i put a hole in a can it to drain it -- it can repair a stripped thread in a alum lawn mower block  just have to heat with a good bolt in hole( hoping ya got it straight) an force the rod in let kool and back bolt out. but a can is all it fix
Reply:Tried it because a friend had a stick of it. He was all excited about it. It didn't work, he was sad. John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:That might just be why you don't see it at your local welding supply. It's BS ....... Another miracle cure for the home handyman to be tricked into buying I suppose.  Washman
