I'm trying to replace the bottom of a stainless steel sink for a small boat that's 20ga, but I can't seem to get a good bead without burning tons of holes in it(on a practice piece of course) I have a HF 120amp MIG machine w/ gas and I'm using the lowest heat setting which is 30 amps, but is seems like if I go fast enough to not burn through, I can't keep the arc steady and I just get spatter all over it. I realize now it might have been easier to cut the new bottom bigger and do lap joints, but I know it won't look as good that way. I'd like to to butt joints and grind it smooth because it is something you will see. So is this just a practice, practice, practice issue, or am I just going about it all wrong? I might just take it to someone who knows what they're doing and be done with it, but I'd kinda like to be able to do it myself. Thanks ahead of time for any help.
Reply:The only success I've had is using a TIG with argon.  You will also need to purge the back side of the weld if possible.  (welding from the back side and flooding inside of the sink?)
Reply:i'm afraid a mig is not gonna do it my friend...tig all the way..sorry.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:I would also tig it but if you do not have a tig machine you could try trigger welding it (a poor mans pulser). It is like spot welding you give a short trigger pull to fuse the metel let off move forward and start the process again.   I would however not recommend this for anything structual.   Kevin
Reply:that's what I was afraid of, looks like I'm taking it somewhere to get it done right. At least I got the new bottom cut out and formed right, so there's no extra fab work. Hopefully won't cost me too much. Thanks again for the quick replies.

Reply:Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa .... Pardon me but if you have to take a little sink from a boat and pay someone to TIG weld it wouldn't it make more sense to buy a new sink ....Call me silly . .. ... ....Washman
Reply:it might make more sense if I could actually find a new sink anywhere, its from a 35 year old boat and the main reason I'm replacing the bottom is because I needed to move the drain to line up with a new through-hull fitting. Believe me, if I could find a new sink with the right drain location, I'd be all over it. I was also thinking of cutting some extra strips to go around the seam and just brazing it on, kinda like tape. wouldn't be nearly as pretty, but would be a lot cheaper.
