Hello, I have gotten a little rusty since my last welding/fab class and dont remember all the specifics for saddling pipe.Is there any good links where they show dummy instructions for it?Thanks! -StouffREAL Truks aint gots Spark PlugsNuthin like the Smell of Fresh Slag
Reply:Not sure what you mean by "saddle"  Are you making up bent flat bar hangers for supporting pipework?  I often have to make up a dozen or so.  Some capture the complete pipe and others only support the under half.
Reply:believe he is referring to pipe notching, alot of people refer to it as a saddle (myself included)
Reply:Maybe it a geographic thing? We call it copeing. As in notching the post so that a horiz. pce. fits in.
Reply:try this site or google parallel line deveopment for pipe patternshttp://www.gizmology.net/development.htm

Reply:When saddleing pipe say 2" have it in a fixed position.Take your torch and make a small cut at the top and bottom of the square end of the pipe so the small cuts line up.Mark from the edge of the small cuts back 1".Make your cuts 1" back on the top and roll the pipe and do the same to the bottom.Get the center of both sides of the pipe and make a small mark.Take a rap-around and lay it on where you stopped the small cut`s on each side and pull the rap-around to your center marks to the edge of the pipe and draw your lines which will be four cut lines.Re-position your pipe where the small cuts and lay-out lines are looking vertical.Start your cutting at your 1" cut back marks and follow the lines to the center of the pipe where you made your small marks. After a little practice on the smaller pipe no lines are needed. On bigger pipe you will want to lay-out for your saddles.Say you have a 12" piece of pipe then you would measure back 1/2 of the pipes size which would be 6".The saddles should fit pretty close after clean up.Good luck.Steve.
Reply:I recently met a man who used to build roll cages.  He said he would take a pipe larger than the one he wanted to notch. The pipe being notch must be able to be inserted into the larger pipe.  He would cut his notch in the larger pipe, then cut it in half along the seam.  He would weld a hinge onto it and a latch on the other end.  This would make his pattern for notching which he did with a torch.  The pattern last forever.I can see this being very beneficial if you do a lot fo the same size pipe.  I have seen these patterns sold in welding shops.
Reply:I like cutting them with a saw. Fast and easy. Attached Images
Reply:I made a small script to calculate the angles of cutting.http://snip.awardspace.com/

Reply:Clay, it is fast. That joint could be done in less than 20 seconds with my Multicutter. Sure is better than doing them by hand with a torch and grinder. Here is a comparison I did awhile back. Attached Images
