Hey fellas/ladies,I am going to make a mixing desk for my church. It will hold a mixer, tape deck, wireless gear and various other things weighing a total of about 100 lbs. I plan on it having a couple shelves and a two level table top for easy access to equipment.I am planning on making it from square tube, but not sure what size to use. I was thinking 1" x 1/4 tube would be fine and hold the weight, but want to make sure with the experts here. If I drop the mixer I'll be broke for a long time! Lincoln AC-225
Reply:That's some heavy tubing, it should hold up no problem. I have a steel rack behind the shop made from 1" tubing with about 1/16" wall thickness. It must have 800lbs of steel on it.
Reply:Cool. I didn't know for sure how much weight a given tube would hold. Thanks Joe!Lincoln AC-225
Reply:A bit depends on the design of the shelf unit and how things are attached and where the weight is hanging. For a 'table' with four legs, cross-pieces horizontally connecting the legs, and the shelves on top of the cross-pieces, 1 inch square tube with a wall thickness of 1/16 to 1/8 inch will be plenty strong to hold 100 pounds of equipment, especially spread out across a few different shelves on the rack.A cantilever shelf sticking out three feet from the uprights with the 100 pounds at the farthest edge from the upright would probably need a little bit bigger and stronger material and weld.
