Hello:I have very little experience with welding. I have a Lincoln 175 welder. I am working on a 55 Chevy truck. My questions are: I am working on smoothing the firewall. There are several holes (about 30) of different sizes. From pencil diameter to where I can put three of my fingers thought it. What is the best way to fill these holes?  The other question: What is the best wire to use so that I can grind it later on? I hope these questions help others as well. Thanks in advance for the help.
Reply:Hmm... the hole filling: on the smaller holes, a chunk of brass or copper works awesome.  Hold the chunk on the backside of the hole, and from the front side, fill it up. ( kinda like a plug weld ).  The larger holes, would take a lot of wire to fill... so I'll let someone else chime in there.  Maybe a piece of sheet metal from a junk fender or something. My guess on the weld/grind issue, just dont pile it on.  maybe not the best help, but some...
Reply:There have been a couple of posts about just such a job.http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=3526This gives you a basic step-by-step of the "hole" thing...a little pun there.....at least I think that's a pun...OK, so it's not that funny...For bigger holes, filling may not be the best route....a patch may be better...if they are regular in shape, that could be easy...if they can be MADE regular...same thing.Last edited by smithboy; 10-20-2006 at 06:47 PM.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I have done a few projects like this, Usualy I will make a few patches that will cover several holes with sheet metal. Weld it up (I have used a Ironman 250 with .030 wire) Low setting carefuly so you dont blow holes in it. then grind and body work it. The best way in my opinion is to cut patches and use a spot welder but if you dont have a spot then your out of luck. 55's are nice show us some pics.Sorry forgot to spell checkLast edited by drivesector; 10-20-2006 at 07:10 PM.Drivesector Hobart Handler 140Hobart Handler 180Ready Welder 2Hobart Air Force 400Airco Stinger 225Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most."OZZY"
