Weird Weld

This might be a stupid question, but here it goes.  I was welding up some cracks on my father in-laws dumptruck, and I did a weld in the horizontal position, and it stood up. After I finished the weld, it kind of grew at one end and looked gross.  Could this be caused by welding on metal that could be a bit rusty?Any Info Would Be Greatly AppreciatedThanks, John
Reply:"it kind of grew at one end and looked gross." it sounds to me like weld contamination from dirt, grease, rust etc, or poor shielding (if i understand the explanation(which is a tad vague)). IF this is the case grind it out, wire brush it clean, and try it again.for better, more educated responses post pictures if you can, or give more details, proccess (mig, stick, fluxcore), machine used, settings, shielding (if applicable), electrode, material thickness etc...dont forget that the material being welded may very well need to be cleaned both inside and out. welding with a shielding gas should be done indoors or when there is no wind to blow the coverage away.
