I just came across a Miller AEAD200LE for sale on Ebay that says it is stick and TIG capable. Here's the link for anyone who's interested:http://cgi.ebay.com/miller-gas-drive...QQcmdZViewItemI just happen to have one of these machines myself that I use for stick welding. My question is, is this machine TIG capable and if so, what do I need or have to do to TIG with it?BTW I have never tig welded before but want to. I'm taking a vo-tech night school class on welding that will eventually cover tig. It would be nice if I could use the machine I have to practice with before buying something better.Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:Any cc welder is capable of tig. I just don't think the aead is capable of remote control, unless you wire it in directly somehow. This will slow you down, but not prevent you from tigging. You can scratch start with just the addition of a tig torch, argon, and a gas flow-though adapter that hooks to your output. If you wanted to add HF for arc starting, you just need to cable it in and plug it into your ac outlet...hf boxes differ a bit in complexity. The simpler ones are REALLY simple.Smithboy...if it ain't broke, you ain't tryin'.
Reply:I was at a heat treating place in Woburn, MA several years ago and I noticed they had an old tombstone stick welder connected to an Argon gas cooled TIG torch. I don't remember any other modules (high frequency)etc.. hooked in. They had a mini-production line going with someone tack welding 2 parts together. Seemed to work..

I used to get asked this so much that I did a detailed writeup about it, and and another guy asked to host it and keep it online.http://www.az-zbum.com/welder.upgrade.shtml
Reply:Thanks lil john, you're right, that is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!!!Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!
Reply:A question for you, how do you control the power? The only machine I ever worked with had settings on the machine itself and a foot pedal. Can you control the arc well enough using a machine with limited settings and no pedal? If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over. |
