I am trying to weld 1/4" to about 3/16 steel plate. I am using flux core with .030 wire welder set on about 350 to 400 wire speed and set about e or f setting. start welding going along pretty good then snap welds wire to tip. only get about 3" or so. the metal is rusty on one piece and painted on the other. I have a power mig 215. thanks for the help.
Reply:If something is causes the wire feed to hesitate (get hung up), the wire will burn back to the tip.
Reply:thanks for responding so quickly, I think that mite be the problem, because when I went to re spool the gun I noticed that the wire was coming off of the roll tight in some spots.

Reply:The obvious, but try to keep the gun cable/liner as straight as possible. Any sharpe bends or circles will also make a little restriction and cause the wire speed to slow down and cause the wire to start burning at the tip. Also make sure the rollers arent too tight and flattening the wire. That would make the feed a little restricted and slow the feed speed down and cause the wire to start burning at the tip.
Reply:I had a similar problem w/ my Hobart Handler. I went to the next size tip and its been working great ever since. Since your using .030 wire, try an .035 contact tip and see if it helps.Sure, I can fix it... I got a welder!!!

Reply:Clean up the pieces where your welding & the spot where you atatch the ground.
Reply:I had a similar problem with my .030 wire at work at started using "DIAMOND TIPS" brand tips and it really helped a lot. The tips are harder and the spatter didn't stick them as bad. |
