New guy wanting to learn the trade. But where? Advice...

Hey all. Just found this website. I want to start welding. Its seems so interesting. I would also like to learn some fabricating as well. I did a couple of years of welding in High School which was years ago. All I remember is that it was much more fun than wood shop back then! I dont know where to begin. I looked for welding schools, but I found ONE in Florida where i live. Its in Jacksonville which is 5 hours from where I live. Im having family issues right now with illness and cant be that far away. Even if I could I dont have the financial ground to pay for school right now. Is it possible to learn under someone at a local shop, or are those days long gone? Do I HAVE to go to school, or can I learn now and get my paper later? I have no set trade at 28 years old. I want to do something Im going to like doing day in and day out, thats a needed skill so that I can still make a living from it etc. Thanks for any help here.
Reply:from the sound if it you need to find a shop that needs help..but the bottom is where you start..school?i dunno..i never went to welding school..but look what can happen....if you "have it in you" then you will do ok..if not?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Find yourself a shop that needs a willing helper.  You may only be driving the forklift and grinding but it will give you an idea what the industry is like.  There are lots of shops needing someone who can read a tape measure and show up to work on time every morning.  Once you talk to some of your workmates you will have a better idea about how to move ahead be it night school or on the job training.
