I was doing some bits and pieces on the weekend - getting my trailer ready for my Christmas camping expedition with the girls - and I was in a bit of a hurry. So I was painting red primer on metal that was still pretty hot from welding and grinding. Naturally, it dried very quickly. I was just curious to know whether this is a good or bad thing? Does primer adhere better to hot or cold metal or doesn't it make any difference at all?Scott
Reply:I'm darn sure not a paint specialist but I've had a lot better luck on hot than cold. For the kind of work I do, if the paint bubbles, it's too hot. If not it's just right.
Reply:Ah Sandy, I knew you'd still be awake. Thanks. It's 5pm Tuesday here and I'm off right now to catch a ferry to my mother's house for dinner.
Reply:Scott, it was 22 deg F this morning and I needed to paint some plates I made yesterday. I made them hot just so they would dry faster. Like Sandy said, just below bubblin temp is ok by me. Got my hands warm for a minute too---

Reply:Depends on the paint used and it's composition; most automotive paints are baked at around 140 degrees farenheit to speed along the drying process by evaporating the volitiles quicker, any hotter and the paint will blister and not adhere properly. Taking this to it's logical extreme, too much heat and the material burns away. That said, warm to the touch, not uncomfortably hot, you should be OK.If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over. |
