I've been lurking here for quite a while and I finally ordered a welder last night.  I decided on the Hobart 187.  I am a woodworker by trade and am looking forward to trying something different. I have taken a semester of O/A welding at the local college but don't have time now to take a MIG class so I am on my own.  I have a couple of books that I have read and of course this and other forums so I think I have a pretty good book knowledge, we'll see how that translates into actual welding. All that being said, I have not seen much on how to select material for a project.  Are there catalogs that show the common sizes and thicknesses of tubing, angle, bar, etc?  I would like to know what is available when I design so I don't show up at the material supplier and ask for something that is either not made or an expensive special order and have to redesign in my head on the fly. Thanks for a great forum, I am sure I will have many questions in the coming months.Reece
Reply:AZmanFYI- A quick search produced this website which claims to have an online catalog available for download.  I haven't done it myself and I in no way endorse this site or their products & services.  Hope it helps and welcome.https://www.metalsdepot.com/Cart3/catdl2.phtmlHobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:UPDATE:   A great looking catalog for free.  A lot of good info, mutilple metals, and worth the download time for reference material to add to the library.  I have no idea about their prices though.Hobart 140 Handler w/ gasHyperTherm Powermax 380 Plasmaoxy/acetylene
Reply:Nice disclaimers! (and a neat catalog)If you don't have the time to do it right, then you definitely don't have the time to do it over.

Reply:If you have a local steel supplier you should be able to get (for free) a steel chart which has common size material with wall thickness as well as weight per foot._________________Chris
Reply:Thanks for the replies,Rick, I have downloaded a similar catalog, but it is all inclusive.  Is there a way to know what a local steel supplier is likely to have in stock?   I imagine there are certain sizes that are commonly used.I like knowing what I am looking for when I go in, as opposed to wasting their time by trying to figure it out in the warehouse.  Our local suppliers are not really setup as a retail outlet, but as a commercial supplier. Thanks again,Reece
Reply:I ordered from Metalsdepot in the past and I was happy, they were the best on the web I could find.  They delivered right to the house and it was not too bad.  I don't really know if they are competitive with my local supplier in that I did not  use my current supplier at that time.  I know they were cheaper than one place I got steel from when I did not have a choice.  They included their catalog and if that is what you can download it would be good deal.
