Hi,I don't weld, so I'll have to hire someone for this job, but want to first get an idea of what it's going to cost.I want to convert a stand I bought into a vise stand, which means the post will need a plate welded to the top.(My photos are probably going to make me look redundant)Ok, the vise (an 'angle vise') tilts more than I need it to :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2074.jpgSo, I want the base of the vise to be sitting at an angle on the stand. In this photo, I just set the vise on the stand, at about the angle that I want it to be :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2075.jpgI want it that way, because it will tilt 90 degrees in one direction and then be able to tilt about 35 degress in the other direction, which will be kind of essential for the main purpose of the vise stand (to hold a guitar fretting beam jig)The existing post on my stand will need to be cut off at the end, at about 20 degrees. I don't think I can do that myself, since I want a clean accurate cut done on a machine. I want as little material removed from the post as possible (want to keep as much potential height capability as possible)So, here's a "mock up" of that :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2072.jpgThe actual post that will need to be cut is 2-3/8" diameter :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2078.jpgThen I need a 1/4" (?) thick 8-1/16" X 5-1/4"  strong steel plate. I don't have this, and am reluctant to try to make that myself. It will also need 4 holes drilled and tapped for the vise ( I *could* do that part)Ok, "mock-up" of plate welded to post :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2076.jpgAnd I'm keen on having some extra "support pieces" welding under the plate :http://usera.imagecave.com/soapbarst..._stand2077.jpg I guess I'd also like to know what kind of equipment I should expect someone to have, to be able to do this job right. If the plate were to ever snap off the post, it could cause hundreds of dollars worth of damage for me. In other words, I want the kind of weld, where the metal next to the weld would shear apart before the weld comes apart. (I got an office chair that did that)Anyway, thanks for reading this and I appreciate any information/advice.RobLast edited by Welders_Grandson; 02-24-2007 at 02:23 PM.
Reply:Well Rob, this is a pretty easy fix for anybody with just about any knowledge of welding. I think i'd be able to do it in about 30 minutes.  But you probably don't want to make the trip up to Canada so i can fix your stand.  If you want the least amount taken off the pipe as posible, i suggest cutting it at the base with a sawzall, or a cutting wheel.  Then slice of a nice thin peice off with a chop saw, if the first cut wasn't clean enough and clean up the edges.  What you need is somebody with a stick (aka arc) welder and a 7018 rod, or a mig welder to come over and weld it on, as well as a few gussets, like you want for extra support.  As far as your office chair, well it wasn't made out of quarter inch plate.  And if this is done well it with gussets on it, i'd say it would hold up a few thousand lbs.I'm usually not a praying man, but if your up there, please save me superman
Reply:Tell you what If you are any good at fret jobs send me the post with the cut marked on it, the base dimensions and I'll take care of the rest. I have a fret job I may want to do on a bound 24 fret Jackson neck. Looks like you have something with maybe a Warmoth neck on it in one of the pics. I'd hace to see some of your work though. I get nervous about fret jobs, this neck plays awesome._________________Chris
Reply:The trick will be getting the plate centered on the newly cut post.  Id bandsaw it, use a 3/8" base, drill the holes, weld and be done.  Take the post to a pipe supply store (they have saws that will do a super job on the cut.  Just tell em the degree you need, or mark the pipe for em.  They wont charge much.  Get your self a 3/8" plate cut with about 1" extra around the vice for support.  If youve got a drill press, you can drill the holes yourself (start small, then work your way up and keep the bit cool, brake fluid or wd40will work if you dont have any cutting solution).  After that, the welding comes in.  If all the person has to do is weld up the plate it should be cheap.  Insist that its tigged. heh..  If he's gotta get the material, do the cutting and drilling, its gonna cost more.  Do as much as you can on your own.  To me, if your gonna do guitar work with it, gussets are way overkill.  A good fillet on the bottom of the pipe to the plate will more than suffice and still support 1000 lbs.  That pipe must be chromed...Anyhow, good luck.  Just call around.  To find your metal, see if a metal supply shop has a 3/8 cutoff around the size you need.Or send it to Lorenzo .  I gaurantee that if he welds it, nothings gonna break.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.

Reply:This is what I built from scrap.  http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...sestand002.jpg If some one sees it and wants one I usually get $75 minus the vise.Last edited by TozziWelding; 02-25-2007 at 03:20 PM.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Hey man, Fret and repair work on a guitar is harder than youd think, and anyone who messes with my babies better know his stuff!  (Ive got a few guitars).  Quick question for you.  I have a Les Paul that Ive learned to hate the binding on (yes it has the nibs).  Would there be a groove left if the binding was removed from the neck?Tig just looks better.  It can be migged or sticked too.  Its what your welder is proficient at, and any process will be more than sufficient for the stand.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:I will probably paint the plate, and top few inches of pipe (including the welded area) with black paint, after the welding work is done, so I don't want it to look too good to get covered with paint. But also don't want it to look like " damn, I should have had someone else do this". HahaYeah, your LP would have a ridge along the neck sides, if the binding was pulled off, so don't do it (some binding is even T shaped, and there's another small goove milled into the neck for that hidden part to fit into) .  It's routine to notch new frets on the ends, to fit over the binding, then you get "playing surface" the whole width of the neck (Like a neck with no binding) . The nibs are first sanded off, before new frets are put in.  Doing that makes the guitar a better player, but less desirable for vintage guitar collectors who want it all factory stock.
Reply:I can't help ya..I'm a drummer.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Thanks for the info.  When it comes time for a refret Ill probably have that done.  I dont think youll to worry too much about that plate coming off or anything. This may sound a bit hokey, but take your idea and stuff to the local tech school (vocational school) welder shop (the class I go to has got all the latest stuff).  He might only charge for materials and have one of his good students weld it up for you n/c.  Im sure it will be a top notch job (the instructor wont let you get anything thats not done right).Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
